🌱Biodiversity series: Some species depend on very specific conditions to survive.

The Anacamptis morio orchid, observed at our sites, relies on just one or two insect species for pollination and is considered near-threatened in Europe.

Protecting biodiversity means protecting these fragile ecological relationships.

🌱Biodiversity series: Not all biodiversity thrives in water or forests. 🌼

Dry grasslands at our sites support a highly specialized ecosystem.

These areas attract pollinators, butterflies and rare plant species including wild orchids such as Ophrys apifera.

They also act as ecological corridors, helping species move and connect across landscapes.

🌱Biodiversity series: Some species need very specific conditions to survive. 🐦

At our Crépy-en-Valois site in France, vertical sandy slopes provide ideal nesting conditions for sand martins (Riparia riparia).

These birds carve galleries into the cliffs forming breeding colonies that are becoming increasingly rare in natural environments. These habitats are created and maintained as part of our site operations, showing how industrial environments, when carefully managed can actively support biodiversity.

In 2023, around 150 nests were recorded on site. An example of how Sibelco integrates biodiversity into its sustainability approach, protecting species while shaping the landscapes we operate in.

🌱Biodiversity series: Where water settles, ecosystems grow. 💧

Water bodies created through our operations quickly become essential habitats.

At Mios, France, they provide drinking sources for wildlife during dry periods and act as resting areas for migratory birds.

Over time, these spaces support entire ecosystems, from aquatic life to birds and mammals.

🐨 Home, at last.

Two orphaned koalas have been successfully released on North Stradbroke Island, Australia, after five months of dedicated care and rehabilitation.

Sibelco was proud to support the local veterinary team, Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation and volunteers in preparing the joeys for their return to the wild, including the development of a pre-release enclosure where they could build strength and confidence before release.

Their journey has come full circle in an area rehabilitated by Sibelco in the 1990s, where blue gum eucalypts planted more than 30 years ago now provide valuable habitat for koalas. It's a powerful example of how long-term rehabilitation can help create lasting environmental value, supporting local wildlife for generations to come.

Thank you to everyone involved in helping these joeys return home.

🌱Biodiversity series: It starts at the water’s edge. 🌾

At our Mios site in France, reed beds form a natural bridge between land and water, creating ideal conditions for biodiversity to develop.

These areas act as nurseries for amphibians, dragonflies, fish and birds, while also filtering water and storing carbon - demonstrating how nature-based solutions can support both biodiversity and climate resilience.

A simple habitat with multiple environmental functions and one of the ways Sibelco contributes to restoring ecosystems across our sites.
