To encounter a single Wanli ‘Egret’-marked piece is rare. To find thirteen together in one collection is truly exceptional.

The Baert–Devos Collection brings together an extraordinary group of thirteen (!) blue and white ‘Egret’-marked wares. The small egret painted to the reverse identifies a particularly rare and distinctive group of late Ming export porcelain.

This post presents a selection from the group, all published in Maura Rinaldi’s authoritative book 'Kraak Porcelain: A Moment in the History of Trade'.

A rare and technically sophisticated blue and white ‘Magic Fountain’ ewer, bearing a Jiajing mark and of the period.

Its distinctive form derives from Near Eastern metalwork, while its enigmatic decoration reflects the rich artistic exchange between Ming China, the Islamic world and Renaissance Europe. Comparable examples can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Topkapı Palace Museum.

An exceptional figure with a century of provenance.

Lot 19 is a fine Chinese blue and white figure of Zhongli Quan, one of the eight Daoist Immortals, dating to the Jiajing period.

Finely modelled seated on a rocky pedestal, Zhongli Quan holds his fan, believed to possess the power to revive the dead and confer immortality. His robes are richly painted in underglaze cobalt blue with a dragon pursuing a flaming pearl among scrolling clouds, lingzhi, flowers and auspicious emblems. The base bears the incised two-character mark Shi Quan, meaning “Rock Spring”.

Beyond its impressive scale and craftsmanship, this figure has an exceptional history. It belonged to the collection of Charles Russell and Richard Bennet around 1910 and was sold at Sotheby’s London in 1935. It was later handled by Bluett & Sons and S. Marchant & Son before entering the Baert–Devos Collection in 1999.

The figure was exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts during the 1935–1936 International Exhibition of Chinese Art and at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 1977. It has also been published and discussed in several important works on Chinese ceramics.

Six boys, one laughing Budai, and a scene full of playful mischief.

Painted in expressive cobalt blue, this exceptionally rare Chongzhen-period censer depicts the popular subject Liu Zi Xi Mi Le: six boys at play with Budai. While one removes his prayer beads and another takes his hat, the others carry off his shoes and belongings.

Beyond its humour, the scene conveys wishes for happiness, prosperity and a flourishing family lineage.

With a distinguished provenance including the G. Stellman, Drs A. M. Sengers and Baert–Devos collections, the censer was exhibited at the Rijksmuseum in 1978–1979, museum Het Prinsenhof in 1990, and has appeared in several important publications.

Painted with two four-clawed winged dragons among breaking waves and flaming pearls, this rare offering bowl bears a continuous inscription beneath the rim.

The inscription dates the bowl to an auspicious day in the first month of summer in the thirty-second year of the Wanli reign, corresponding to 1604. It expresses wishes for longevity, wealth and honour, a household filled with gold and jade, good fortune and success in all endeavours.

Its provenance includes Christie’s London in 1966, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the F. Gordon Morrill Collection, S. Marchant & Son and the Harriet Szechenyi Collection. It was exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 1971 and later included in Marchant’s 2004 exhibition.

This rare two-handled blue and white censer is painted with the Eight Daoist Immortals in a continuous landscape, accompanied by cranes and their characteristic attributes. Further figures include Hanshan and Shide - the Immortals of Harmony.

An inscription precisely dates the censer to the ding si year of the Wanli reign, corresponding to 1617. A second inscription reads: “Beautiful vessel of Wang Shengyu.”

Its provenance includes Sotheby’s London in 1977, Bluett & Sons, Sotheby’s Hong Kong in 1999 and S. Marchant & Son. It was published by Sheila Riddell in 1979 and featured on the cover of Marchant’s 2004 exhibition catalogue.

Chinese porcelain, Spanish heraldry and a form inspired by Islamic metalwork - three traditions united in one exceptional object.

Made at Jingdezhen during the Wanli period, this rare blue and white bottle vase bears the arms associated with Philip II of Spain. Such pieces were produced for export and travelled to Europe along Portuguese trade routes.

Formerly in the Idemitsu Museum of Arts, Tokyo, and later with Jorge Welsh Works of Art, the vase entered the Baert–Devos Collection in 2013. It has been published in Chinese Armorial Porcelain for Spain and Ceramic Art of the World: Ming Dynasty.
