A monumental Burmese white marble Buddha
Ava Kingdom, 17th century, 114 cm.

This impressive sculpture depicts Śākyamuni Buddha seated in vajraparyankāsana, with the right hand in bhūmisparśa mudrā, symbolising the moment of enlightenment.

Carved from white marble with traces of gilt-lacquer, the serene expression and finely pleated robe reflect the sculptural tradition of the Post-Pagan period in Burma.

From an important private Belgian collection, this is lot 401 in our upcoming Spring Sale.

Lot 756 – Gabriel Viardot (1830–1906)
Japonesque display cabinet, France, signed and dated 1886

A characteristic and finely executed cabinet by Gabriel Viardot, one of the most accomplished interpreters of Japanese design in late 19th-century Paris.

The architectural form, restrained yet purposeful, is enriched with mother-of-pearl and bone inlay — decorative without excess, and entirely in keeping with Viardot’s refined aesthetic. The balance between structure and ornament, the carving and the carefully composed panels reveal a workshop working at full maturity in the 1880s.

Viardot’s furniture, exhibited internationally and supplied to a discerning clientele, remains among the most convincing expressions of French Japonism — neither imitation nor pastiche, but a thoughtful adaptation of Eastern models into Western cabinetmaking tradition.

03/03/2026

This impressive pair of Chinese famille verte vases is decorated with the celebrated scene of the birthday festivities of Guo Ziyi (郭子儀祝壽), one of the most auspicious narrative subjects in Chinese porcelain.

Guo Ziyi, the esteemed Tang dynasty general, came to symbolise longevity, honour, prosperity and the blessing of many descendants. His birthday celebration — surrounded by family members, attendants and officials — became a powerful emblem of success, rank and dynastic continuity.

The palace terraces across the bodies of the vases are rendered in famille verte enamels, with architectural detailing and animated figural scenes, characteristic of the Kangxi period.

A subject traditionally associated with celebration and prestige, and a fitting theme for a pair of this scale and presence.

Lot 628 on the second day of our two-day sale.
