A world first for İGA İstanbul Airport, which has become the first airport globally to meet 100% of its electricity needs from solar energy 🌍✈️
Currently accredited at Level 4 of Airport Carbon Accreditation, the airport has inaugurated its 240 MW Eskişehir Solar Power Plant, developed through a €220 million investment across approximately 3 million square metres. The project is among the largest renewable energy investments in the global aviation sector.
The solar power plant is expected to prevent 212,800 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually. In addition, the airport has reduced its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 27.8% compared with its 2019 baseline.
By sourcing all of its operational electricity from renewable energy, iGA Istanbul Airport is taking a significant step towards its 2050 net zero emissions target and demonstrating how large scale energy transition projects can support airport decarbonisation.
