Expats of Brussels - #50

Yevgeniy (36), in Brussels since 2017

“It feels like life is a little bit more formal here, which also relates to the industry I work in. More formal in the way people dress, how they interact with each other and how much structure and order there is. There is less spontaneity than in the other places I lived before. It took me a while to get used to, but sometimes it is also nice to have this structure and know what to expect. When queuing up, I know it will be a straight line.

I am in the process of saying goodbye to the friends I made in the last few years. I never get attached to a place, but I do get attached to people. My favourite bar is my favourite because that is where I meet friends. There is an abundance of bars, restaurants, and places to see the sunset – but the people that are with you make the difference. And those will be the memories I take with me, when I pack my bags to return home.”

Expats of Brussels - #50

Yevgeniy (36), in Brussels since 2017

“I am returning home in a few weeks, and it makes me look back to all the memories I have made here over the past five years. The best memory by far is the birth of my daughter. We will always have a special connection to this place because of that. Apart from that, I cherish the friendships I made and my professional achievements.

Brussels was a natural destination for me. I specialise in European international relations and EU research funding programs, so Brussels is the place where all of that is happening. It has been in the works a long time, and my partner and I studied at the College of Europe in Bruges before moving here. It was always in the books for us.

It is a great place for foreigners because it is so international. Getting to know people is easy, because you do not have the barriers that exist in other places, where locals are not used to foreigners. Brussels is an international hub like London or New York – a bunch of people, coming together and learning how to live with each other.”

Expats of Brussels - #49

Rachelle (45), from the Philippines, in Brussels since 2005

“I have both Belgian and Filipino citizenship, but I do not feel completely Belgian nor fully Filipino. Whenever I visit the Philippines, I realise I do not understand the country anymore and have become too candid compared to the average Filipino.

But I also do not understand the Belgian mentality at times, even though I am married to a Belgian. I guess I am just a citizen of the world and I feel lucky to have both Belgian and international friends that share that global perspective.

My husband has a dream for our retirement days: he would like to live in two countries and go wherever the weather is good. Winters savouring the tropical warmth in the Philippines and summers enjoying the long days in Belgium.

But retirement is still a long way off and life is always full of surprises, so I’m just going with the flow. Perhaps you can ask me again in ten years where our next adventure will be.”

Expats of Brussels - #49

Rachelle (45), from the Philippines, in Brussels since 2005

“When I was in my twenties, I embarked on the biggest adventure of my life and left Manila to study in the Netherlands. My plan was to complete my master’s degree and to travel around Europe during the school breaks before coming back to the Philippines. Little did I know that those two years away from my home country would stretch to almost 20 years.

I moved to Brussels after finishing my studies in the Netherlands, since I was fortunate enough to find a job here. I thought it would be relatively easy for me to adjust to Brussels after having lived in the Netherlands for almost 2 years. Two neighbouring countries, sharing the same language – how different could they really be? I must admit I was quite naïve in making this assumption, since the difference between those two countries is like night and day. In Belgium, I find that things are generally not so straightforward. I cannot count how often I got lost using public transport.

Looking back, I realised that Belgium has more similarities to the Philippines than the Netherlands, because of the shared Catholic tradition. I also find that the Belgians tend to enjoy life more and generally want to have a good time. There is good food, excellent beer and numerous music festivals to choose from. It is no wonder I fell in love with a Belgian and to the charms of my adoptive country.”

Expats of Brussels - #48

Gabriel R. (36), from Scotland, in Brussels since 2020

“Finding an apartment and a job from abroad was hard – especially during the lockdowns. No company wants to hire you if you are not physically in the country, but I wanted the guarantee of a job before moving here.

Then finding an apartment when I had never even been to the country. The viewings were online, I did not even see the actual flat or the neighbourhood until I came down to sign the contract.”

Expats of Brussels - #48

Gabriel R. (36), from Scotland, in Brussels since 2020

“As a joke, I like to tell people I am a Brexit refugee. But I had wanted to get out of Britain for a while. The first time I left, I went on exchange to Slovakia. I felt so free. Nobody knew me, nobody was watching me, there were no expectations of how I should behave. That is when I realised that it was Britain I needed to get away from.

I tried living in Spain, Italy, and Argentina, but things just never worked out and I always had to return to Scotland. This time it is different, Brussels is my destination, at least until retirement. When people visit me, they notice that I am happier here, more at peace."
