Meet Up #57 - Summer Edition 🌞

Time to make your flip-flops shine! Jean-Roule is still hesitating between his 253 favorite pairs. But we are quite confident that he will arrive on time on Thursday, July the 3rd, to welcome you for this - Summer Edition Meetup -. We missed you, and we know that you missed him. We missed him too, actually. Our favourite goofball took a forced sabbatical year because… well… officially to meet new disciples during his “Roulotte tour”. If you ask him for more details, he would probably start to mumble something about some sort of corn labyrinthic field (apparently, it took him 360 days to eat his way out of it). So maybe it’s still a bit too soon to mention corn, wheat, or any type of cereal… Any other topics should sound safe though! Aaaaaw see you there!

*see you here* :🌽

Jean-Roule: Hey, where are you from? Another galaxy far, far away?

Alexis: I arrived from France a long, long time ago...  This August will mark the date when I will have lived longer in Belgium than in France: nineteen years on each side of the border. So you could say I'm.. Frelgian?

JR: Do you have a favourite theme? How do you define your work?

A: A little too geeky to be an artist, but a little too artistic to be really geeky... I love technology and spending my life in front of a computer, but I get bored too quickly to really be a specialized technician. Let's just say I'm looking for myself a lot, and I try to do it while having fun every step of the way!

JR: My little finger tells me that you dabble in a lot of things: 2D animation, 3D, photography, and even piano. Do all these practices blend together for you?

A: I wish they'd do it more! For me, they correspond to very different states of mind: I work in motion design, I have fun with 3D, and photography is more of a personal exploration... These three areas of my work revolve around each other without really touching, but it's a balance that suits me for the moment.

JR: Aliens abduct you to create an intergalactic work of art, what would be your first project with them?

A: An animal documentary about humans! I'll do the translation

JR: If you could travel through space and time, where and when would you go?

A: On the moon, July 20, 1969, for the joke.

JR: Are you working on a project for 2024? Will you add a new hobby?

A: quite a few projects have already been launched, but the one that's going to occupy me the most this year is (if all goes to plan) a little outside my usual field of expertise: I'm going to be a father, so yes, I imagine I'll have some new hobbies.

JR: Thank you for all these enlightening answers about yourself. I wish you lots of happiness for the future, and we'll see you on Thursday at 7:00 PM at Munch!

If you thought you knew animators, wait until you meet a "rustic animator". The so-called "rustic" animator has a graphics tablet WaCow, there's always a forest "in between" each key pose, they usually go from "ease indoor" to "ease outdoor" and they always add lardons with their "onion skin".

Now you know who they are. Oh yes, finally, Alexis Fradier, in addition to be a Rustic Animator, will always have a nice camera around his neck. Cheese.

L’Enroule Meetup #52

When Jean-Roule was just 4 years old, his mum started telling him stories to explain everyday things, like how his socks disappearing or why there was a light in the fridge... But the story that had the greatest impact on Jean-Roule was the one of “GliGli GlaGla, the man in the wardrobe”. Every night, GliGli GlaGla comes out of his wardrobe to check that the children are sleeping well. GliGli GlaGla doesn't like to know that a child is in danger of missing his minimum 9 hours' sleep. When this happens, he climbs out of the bedroom wardrobe and hugs the child until they fall asleep. Fortunately, GliGli GlaGla no longer checks the sleep of children over the age of 12. So there's no need to worry about coming to the 52nd MeetUp and getting home late after midnight. GliGli GlaGla won't be there.

Jean-Roule: Hey there, creative maestro Margaux Baert! So, spill the beans - where do your paper adventures begin, and what brought you to the heart of Brussels?

Margaux: I’m from Wépion, the country of strawberries! After a year in the US, I came to Brussels for my studies in La Cambre. I then worked with a Parisian studio and I had my first projects abroad, but I love to be in Brussels. The atmosphere here is vibrant, dynamic and exciting, yet the city it has this village-like vibe.

JR: How would you define your paper-prowess, and how did you ended up there?

M: I'd say my work is refined, delicate, poetic but sometimes a little dark and twisty. The animals I create tend to be very detailed and majestic but often have an enigmatic feel. I started to work with paper rather late, during my studies in Graphic Design. For a project we had to create images with paper cut. So one night I started to cut feathers and didn’t stopped until early in the morning. I felt I had found my medium. After graduating I worked as a freelance art director but always kept the desire to work with paper. Now, it's my main activity.

JR: Now, let's address the THING : Paper cuts. How did you conquer that fear?

M: I should have more fear of paper cut, as I cut myself WAY too often ;-)  I’m surprised my fingers are still whole! I should be more careful as I haven’t figured out a way to cut paper with my feet… Yet!

JR: Last one, do you have some exciting current or upcoming projects ?

M: I just wrapped up an exciting collaboration with GODIVA for Valentine’s day. We created a limited edition packaging box and a window display for their store in Brussels and London. They even created a praline in my name, the ‘Margaux’ ; a pistachio praliné, covered with dark chocolate and topped with dried strawberries… A collaboration made in Brussels with a touch of my hometown’s renowned fruit!

JR: A praline in your name? Talk about the strawberry on top of the cake! Thanks, Margaux! Let's catch up at our meetup on Thursday at Muche, yeah? 🎉
