🏫 The 10th AEBR Cross-Border School opens the Association of European Border Regions (AEBR)’s Annual Events in Dundalk, Ireland.

Hosted by the East Border Region Committee and the Dundalk Institute of Technology, this edition looks at how cross-border cooperation is governed, from the current geopolitical landscape to trust, cross-border relations and shared heritage in . Speakers from Ireland and the UK will share experiences from Ireland and Northern Ireland, moderated by AEBR Advisor Caitríona Mullan.

🚌 Cross border travel is part of everyday life for many people in the Greater Region.

But when transport systems stop working seamlessly at the border, even a routine journey can become unnecessarily complicated.

TicketDeLux shows how cooperation between neighbouring regions can remove one of those everyday barriers and make public transport easier to use.

Its continuation beyond the pilot phase is a concrete example of how Interreg can help turn practical solutions into lasting improvements for people living and travelling across borders.

🏆 And the winner of Pitch Your Project is… Navig'Alps! 🎉

Pitch Your Project gives young people from the Alpine region the opportunity to present concrete ideas and solutions for the future of the Alps. 🏔️ The finale took place on 22 October in Lindau, in the context of the Annual Forum of the EU Strategy for the Alpine Region.

🌍 Navig’Alps is an accessibility-focused trip planning web platform for people with reduced mobility visiting Alpine regions. The project aims to make Alpine tourism more inclusive by providing reliable, location-based accessibility information on accommodation, outdoor activities, cultural attractions, restaurants, transport and essential visitor services.

🏆 As the winner, Navig’Alps receives a €5,000 prize from the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté Region to support the development of their project.

💡Good local ideas shouldn’t get lost in paperwork.

For smaller organisations, NGOs and local groups, administrative requirements can make it harder to take part in cross-border cooperation.

In consultations on the future of Interreg, respondents called for more flexible funding, support for small-scale projects and less administrative burden.

The goal: make it easier for local actors to turn ideas into action and focus more time on results for their communities.

🇬🇧 Galicia and Northern Portugal are calling for a shared economic agenda. At the 1st Cross-Border Atlantic Forum in Santiago de Compostela, priorities were set for deeper integration: easier labour mobility, simpler administrative procedures and stronger rail links, including Vigo–Porto and the Atlantic Corridor. 6.5 million inhabitants, 750,000 businesses and nearly 22,500 cross-border workers in 2025.

En el I Foro Atlántico Transfronterizo en Santiago de Compostela, se fijaron prioridades para una mayor integración: más movilidad laboral, procedimientos más sencillos y mejores conexiones ferroviarias, incluidos Vigo–Oporto y el Corredor Atlántico. 6,5 millones de habitantes, 750.000 empresas y cerca de 22.500 trabajadores transfronterizos en 2025.

♟️ A game of chess but the progress isn’t measured in wins.

For children growing up in marginalised Roma communities, opportunities to learn, develop confidence and connect with others aren't always equal.

And this challenge isn't unique to one country.

🇷🇴 🇭🇺 In Romania and Hungary, organisations facing similar problems decided to work together rather than find solutions separately.

With Interreg support, they combined social work and chess education – and reported improvements in children's cognitive assessments and behaviour.

📖 They also developed a practical guide to help other organisations use what they learned.

So the impact doesn't have to end with the last chess match.

🇪🇺 Looking towards Interreg after 2027, projects like CHESS START RO-HU show how cross-border partnerships can help communities develop solutions together – and make them useful to others facing similar challenges.

DG REGIO of the European Commission is launching Inside the Border Focal Point (BFP), a new video series featuring short expert interviews on the work of the Border Focal Point across key cross-border topics. 🎬

Around 30% of EU citizens live in border regions, where legal and administrative differences between national systems continue to create real obstacles in their daily lives. Each episode of the series explores a specific area of the BFP's work, from mobility and health to energy, governance, youth and beyond.

Episode 1 is live now. Nathalie Verschelde, Dirk Peters and Ricardo Ferreira from DG REGIO introduce the Border Focal Point and its mandate. More episodes coming soon. 👇

For people living in border regions, a journey can involve two countries – but also:
😵‍💫 two ticketing systems,
😵‍💫 timetables that don’t connect or
😵‍💫 public transport planned separately on either side.

Europeans have a practical vision for what could change.

🚃 Consultations on the future of Interreg point towards transport services planned more closely across borders, greener mobility solutions and targeted improvements where connections are still missing.

It’s a shift from looking at transport on either side of the border separately to looking at the journey as a whole.

🇪🇺 These priorities are helping inform discussions about Interreg after 2027.

How will the new Skills Portability Initiative make it easier to live in one country and work in another? We are pleased to welcome two speakers from the European Commission to explore what it means for :

🔹 Koen Nomden (DG EMPL), Team Leader for Transparency and Portability of Skills and Qualifications, will present the initiative and what it changes for workers, employers and public authorities.
🔹 Clara Menasseyre (DG REGIO) will deliver the closing remarks and reflect on what the discussion means for people living and working across borders.
