I only had a day and half in Paris this time around but was able to see quite a bit! Saw some fantastic collections from independent brands at Premiere Classe. Always a great selection! First time exhibitors .paris showed their hand blown reinforced glass bracelets. The beautifully handcrafted pieces from Sy&Vie were back, especially the octopus minaudiere. The fabulous range of umbrellas from the family owned Pasotti . Second time showing, the delicious perfumes by sculptor Manuel Mathieu Parfums . Great to see SHOPPE OBJECT PARIS and their fun selection. The first edition of JILL , a great choice of designers and a fun concept. Also a first for the jewelry show Le Rendezvous Vous by Émergence and Francéclat. Stunning pieces from both established and emerging jewelers. Always lovely to catch up with long time collaborators now friends. And then I was lucky to join the celebration dinner for the 50 years of Bosideng at the Eiffel Tower! It was a wonderful evening, learning of their collaborations with designers, both here in Europe and in China. A filled with people from the four corners of the world, all working to support independent fashion.❤️

25 years later.
I still have my copy of this issue.
I still have the memories of being there.
I still remember the horrors of its smells and sounds.
But most of all, I remember the beauty of people coming together for each other. ❤️ .tee I will forever be grateful to you for being there for me and my children.

I had the privilege and honor of meeting the amazing Gloria Steinem in 2016. It was a doubly proud moment as she was there to be interviewed by my niece and I was there with my sister, they’re the ones in the “Repeal” tops, two of my children and my father. A man who for the first half of his life would certainly not have been interested in meeting a feminist. But we all evolve, and my father certainly did. He was so proud of his granddaughter that day, and was very impressed by Gloria herself. Who wouldn’t be? 😉 She did not waste her time on this planet, and will remain an example to us all on how to love a life of purpose. RIP Gloria Steinem ❤️

I had the pleasure of visiting KENTROY YEARWOOD ‘s new work space in Amsterdam. There is nothing better than an atelier…the fabrics, the machines, the mannequins, and the overall creative energy that permeates the space! I would love it if every time anyone bought a piece of clothing they could see the story of the process and people that brought it to them.❤️

TO ALL FASHION DESIGNERS ASPIRING TO START YOUR OWN BRAND, PLEASE WATCH THIS! founder of speaks frankly of the realities of being an independent fashion brand. This is exactly the issue I have been bringing up over the past fifteen years of working with independent fashion. It starts with fashion schools that I believe have a responsibility to teach their students the realities of the business, all while helping them explore their creativity and learning their craft. All must be an integral part of the curriculum because all three are an integral part to being able to exist in the fashion industry. I have seen too many starry eyed talented designers come out of prestigious schools, win a few high image competition wins and then blindly launch their own clothing brand with little to no financing or business knowledge. At the incubator I ran for many years, we would see this situation cross our selection committee every year. It was hard to see real talent but have to be honest and know that because of their lack of business knowledge and financing, they’d eventually hit a wall, or already had and was why they were coming to us. In debt, overwhelmed and exhausted. Of course, as Christina mentions, there is also the question of the banks and the lack of support for fashion businesses. There is still a lot of work to be done on that end. There is also work to be done on a rehaul of the business model that exists today for brands. The financial burden cannot be only carried by them. All this to say, if we want to still have independent fashion businesses in twenty years,it’s time for all of us to do better: schools, financers, consumers, governments…all of us.

I was lucky enough to attend at , the latest performance by Olivier Saillard, a fashion historian and performance artist. “Moda Povera V : les vêtements de Renée” pays tribute to his mother by transforming her wardrobe into a haute couture collection, blending fashion and memory in a moving performance. He manages to create a performance full of poetry, tenderness and beauty. It struck an especially touching cord with me as I too have been going through my mother’s extensive wardrobe ever since she passed, a difficult yet also heartwarming task. Also the model was absolutely perfect! Elegant, exuding strength and grace with such effortlessness.
As so perfectly described in the program: “…he reconciles the idea of a poetic form of fashion, without backing it to the luxury system, while offering a very intimate and extremely touching performance..” Thank you ❤️

It’s hard to imagine it’s been ten years since my mother’s passing. She is the reason fashion has been a part of my life since I can remember. She didn’t work in fashion until later in life, but she was a life long fashionista, in the best sense of the word. This is a photo of us, me 19 years old, at a fashion event in Manila. She had an appreciation for craftsmanship, know-how, beauty, elegance and glamour. I knew the work of most of the fashion maestros and any juicy dramas in their life, by the time I reached my teens. She is missed dearly by all who knew her, her fabulous style and even better storytelling. ❤️

It was wonderful catching up with long time collaborators and friends and meeting the talent behind the brands . Back for another new year’s post, but this time it feels more like the real New Year to me. Is it because I grew up in Asia and celebrated this new year as much as the western one? Probably. But it’s also because it’s a special one! It’s my year, being a Horse myself!
