Global Accessibility Reporting Initiative

Global Accessibility Reporting Initiative GARI is a project designed to help consumers learn more about the accessibility features of mobile phones, tablets and apps: www.gari.info

Almost one in five of the world's population lives with some kind of recognized disability. Sooner or later, everyone will develop at least some limitations in vision, hearing, dexterity or learning. To improve usability for those of us with sensory or physical limitations, phones have features for accessibility, which are continually improving and becoming more prevalent as technologies advance.

The Global Accessibility Reporting Initiative (GARI) is a project designed to help consumers learn more about the various accessibility features of mobile phones and to help them identify phones with the features that may assist them with their particular needs. You can find more information about particular features and how they might be of assistance on the various pages of this site and when you are ready to search for a phone - just click on the 'Find Phones' link in the navigation bar above.

Brazil: Latin America’s biggest market promoting mobile accessibility

With the introduction of the General Regulation on Accessibility in 2016, Brazil became one of Latin America’s most active promoters of making telecommunications accessible for people with disabilities and older users. One important part of this initiative, is informing Brazilian citizens about the kind of accessibility features and solutions that they can already find on the market today and in mainstream devices.

“Don’t take technology too seriously - it is people who are using the technology and need to make sense out of it”

A report from the 1st M-Enabling Forum Europe, 27 September 2018, Düsseldorf

As much as technology is our beacon of hope to give people with disabilities equal access to society, we must not forget that it will always be only a helper or facilitator and not the solution in and of itself. The title statement by Dr. Thomas Kahlisch, board member of the German Association for Blind and Visual Impaired (DBSV), added an important dimension to the discussions at the 1stM-Enabling Forum Europe, which assembled 100 accessibility experts in Düsseldorf.

Gaps as wide as the Grand Canyon: The technological evolution in assistive technology (AT) over the past 20 years has been as stunning as the evolution in consumer electronics. However, the availability and provision of these technologies lags behind and while in some countries is increasingly high-tech, people in other countries do not have access to the even most basic tools. Several speakers at the 2018 workshop outlined the issue with concrete examples and some suggestions for remedies.
