Yesterday, the Northern Sparsely Populated Areas hosted an official session together with The Mission of the Faroes to the EU and Délégation générale du Québec à Bruxelles et pour les institutions européennes at the European Week of Regions and Cities, titled “Towards a Secure, Sustainable and Prosperous Arctic Region”. Mikael Janson from North Sweden European Office moderated the conversation.

The session brought together 140 participants, filling the room with perspectives from across the Arctic and beyond, including representatives from the European Commission and the European Policy Centre (EPC).

One message stood out: there is no single Arctic. The region is diverse, with different realities, perspectives, and opportunities. Above all, the Arctic is home to people and communities. A secure, sustainable and prosperous Arctic can only be achieved by putting the people who live there at the heart of its development.

Through Slido, participants shared the words that came to mind when they thought of the Arctic. Responses ranged from resilience, investment and geopolitics to home, possibility and richness, reflecting the many different dimensions of the region.

The Arctic needs the EU, but the EU also needs the Arctic. Arctic communities are ready to contribute to the future of the Union, but this requires long-term commitment and investment from the EU.

One important example is the EU's specific allocation for the Northern Sparsely Populated Areas (NSPA). This funding is at risk of disappearing in the next EU budget, despite being the EU’s only dedicated support for its EU Arctic territories. During the panel discussion, Åsa Ågren Wikström, representing Region Västerbotten and a member of the European Committee of the Regions, emphasised that this allocation must be maintained if Arctic regions are to continue developing and contributing to the prosperity and resilience of the entire Union.

EU-lagen om att använda skog som stående kollager har hittills inte lyckats väl, en minoritet av medlemsländerna är på väg att klara målen för 2030.
I veckan samlades finsk och svensk skogselit i Europaparlmentet med två parlamentariker som värdar; Jessica Polfjärd från EPP och Katri Kulmuni från Renew. Målet var att utbyta synpunkter på hur lagstiftningen, som kallas LULUCF, kan förbättras.

A stronger Europe starts in its regions 🇪🇺🤝❄️

Yesterday, Rickard Carstedt, Regional Councillor of Region Västerbotten, addressed Members of the European Parliament during a high-level discussion on the future of cohesion policy and the EU's next long-term budget.

The event, organised under the umbrella of , brought together more than 140 European regions to present a common position on the future of cohesion policy. Hosted by Younous Omarjee, Vice-President of the European Parliament, the discussion gathered regions, rapporteurs, shadow rapporteurs and other Members of the European Parliament at the forefront of the negotiations on the future of cohesion policy and the EU budget.

Representing northern Sweden and the Northern Sparsely Populated Areas (NSPA) in the European Arctic, Rickard delivered a clear message: Europe's competitiveness cannot be built from the top down. It grows from regional strengths, innovation ecosystems and long-term investments shaped in partnership with regional and local actors. For the NSPA regions, it is crucial that the EU continues to recognise our permanent structural challenges and that the next long-term EU budget maintains the additional support needed to address them, enabling our regions to unlock their full potential and contribute to Europe's competitiveness, resilience and strategic objectives.

The meeting was concluded by Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, who reiterated Parliament's strong commitment to cohesion policy and the importance of ensuring that regions remain at the heart of Europe's future development.

The day also included a meeting with Fionnuala Bourke, Cohesion Policy Attaché of Ireland to the EU, to exchange views on the ongoing Member State negotiations on the future NRPP. With Ireland currently holding the Council Presidency, it was a timely opportunity to underline the value of a place-based approach and the importance of involving regions from the outset.

As discussions on the future NRPP and EU budget move forward, North Sweden will continue to advocate for a strong place-based approach and strong support for the northern sparsely populated areas.

Så roligt att träffa det här gänget - Regionala Nätverket för Besöksnäring och Turism - som besöker Bryssel under veckan för en serie möten med viktiga aktörer på EU-nivå inom besöksnäring, transport och regional utveckling. Medverkade gjorde bland andra Annika Fredriksson och Magnus Sundling från Arctic Sweden Visitors Board och Teres Gärdin från Jämtland Härjedalen Turism. Besöket kommer väldigt lägligt då vi väntar på EU-kommissionens strategi för hållbar turism och inspel fortfarande välkomnas. North Sweden har redan tidigare bidragit till ett positionspapper inom samarbetet Northern Sparsely Populated Areas för att lyfta de möjligheter och utmaningar vi ser i norr kopplat till hållbar turism 🏔️🌳🦌🌊🌇 Läs det här:

Den här veckan har vi haft besök av 15 representanter från Region 10, en samverkan mellan tio kommuner i Västerbottens och Norrbottens inland.

Under besöket i Bryssel har gruppen träffat representanter från EU-kommissionen, Europaparlamentet, Europeiska regionkommittén, Sveriges kommuner och regioner (SKR) samt nätverket Small and Medium-sized Cities i Bryssel. Vi har diskuterat bland annat EU:s regionalpolitik (sammanhållningspolitiken), konkurrenskraft, energifrågor, landsbygdsfrågor och möjligheter till finansiering.

Det har varit en lärorik vecka och det är av stort värde att få möta representanter från EU-arenan tillsammans med EU:s mest glesbefolkade kommuner för vilka EU:s stöd är avgörande samtidigt som de levererar stora värden. Det är kommuner som levererar förnyelsebar energi, vintertestverksamhet för den globala bilindustrin och biobaserade produkter från skogsbruk och olika råvaror och industriprodukter som Europa behöver, vid sidan av en växande besöksnäring och andra satsningar inom den gröna omställningen.

Just nu pågår förberedelserna inför EU:s nästa programperiod. För norra Sverige är det viktigt att EU:s stödsystem tar hänsyn till förutsättningarna i glesbefolkade områden som Västerbottens och Norrbottens inland. Norra Sverige har samtidigt viktiga resurser och spelar en central roll i det europeiska Arktis, vilket gör regionens utveckling viktig för hela Europa.

Tack till företrädare på Brysselarenan för värdefulla möten och till representanterna från Region 10 som lyfte fram de lokala behov som finns och deras arbete för att bygga utvecklingsförmåga. Besöket var en del av projektet VIGO, som med stöd från Europeiska regionala utvecklingsfonden stärker utvecklingskraften i inlandet. En viktig del är att skapa bättre förutsättningar för att behålla, utveckla och attrahera den kompetens som behövs.
