Think with Things

Think with Things We inspire learning & creative thinking with everyday objects. They are also the things children keep in their pockets as treasures. But are they?

Our journey to bring this idea to life began in July 2014, when we were one of 7 winning teams chosen as the top new education technology companies in Europe, out of 650 entries. The idea is a simple one, to create a community digital library of everyday objects and their connected learning possibilities. Everyday objects are the things found under your sofa, you might throw them away without thin

king twice. A rock from a walk in the woods, a bottle top from the side walk. I collected them as a child, didn’t you? These things are more than your childhood memories or things that clutter your surroundings. We have seen their potential as amazing thinking tools. Children know this and keep them safe, telling stories with them, adding them to their imaginary play, making with them and more. But, we tend to take these things away when it is time to learn, especially the older they get. They must empty their pockets and many times their minds to be fully focused and ready to learn. Why are more and more children disengaging with learning? Is it possible to capture their attention and sense of wonder during structured learning, like those things in their pockets do? At Think with Things we intend to meet this problem head on by helping every ONE every WHERE see the potential in every THING. Over the past 14 years I have been developing this methodology and it is exciting now to combine it with technology in order to share the idea with the world and most importantly for the world to share their wonderful teaching practices with others. One thing we have learned after working with 100’s of teachers with this method is that it needs to be easily integrated into every part of the learning process, at any stage of development, and with a large variety of concepts. Listening to this we have designed 4 powerful tools within our library. These tools integrate easily into many learning scenarios in some cases making the teachers life easier and saving time. They are TWT collect- allows you to keep track of collections, create wish lists and include parents and children in the collection process. TWTconnect- allows you to start with a concept or a collection easily searching our library for connected learning possibilities. TwT capture-allows teachers as well as children to record thinking, by image, video or audio in order to reflect on their learning journey. TWTcommunicate- Allows you to easily share this with colleagues, parents, etc. to show learning, start a conversation or get feedback.

One of the most valuable pieces of feedback on THINGS LAB APP I received recently was:

"I don't know what I can do here."

Not because there wasn't enough content. Quite the opposite. With 50+ games, mini labs, pathways, community spaces, and resources, finding a starting point wasn't always obvious.

So today I've added something new to THINGS LAB.

✨ Intentions

Instead of starting with content, you can now start with what you need.

• I Need Inspiration
• I'm Curious About the Method
• I Just Want to Play
• I Need Group Work Ideas
• I Want to Build Connection
• I'm Feeling Stuck

Choose what feels closest to where you are today and THINGS LAB will help you find your next step. A small change, but I think it makes the whole experience much clearer.

I'd love to know:
Which one would you click first?

If you haven't tried THINGS LAB APP yet you can find it in both Google Play and Apple App stores just type in THINGS LAB and look for the funny brain icon with found objects! (it is free)

Playful Courage
Playful Failure
Playful Trust
Playful Communication
Playful Resilience

Some people stepped in and played. Some hovered at the edge. Some had lovely conversations with me about objects, learning and participation.

And some found it too open and weren’t quite sure how to begin.

And that, honestly, may be the most useful part.

I’m realising that the question is not simply:

“How do we invite people to play?”

It is also:

“How do we frame open-ended play so people understand what kind of participation is being invited?”

Especially in spaces connected to higher education, games, research and adult learning.

The same objects can be read in many ways: as a game, a learning tool, a research method, a creative prompt, a child’s play space, or something in between.

That feels like an important thread to follow.

So I’m coming away with more questions than answers, which is probably exactly what a good test should do.

Thank you to everyone who joined, watched, talked, questioned, or left a trace.

I’ll keep sharing what I’m learning as BRAVE THINGS develops.

At the Games Uk expo today with 10,000 other people. (Not sure the number but a lot 🙃) Discovered many amazing games and met wonderful people.

BTW there is a lot of games in the UK!

Now my feet hurt, but back tomorrow to test my Brave THINGS invitations and explore the academic track of the expo.

I’m on the train to Birmingham with five playful invitations and five small collections of THINGS packed in my bag.

I’ll be testing BRAVE THINGS at UK Games Expo.

These are tiny object-based games exploring what happens when we put the word playful in front of some very human words:

Playful Courage
Playful Failure
Playful Trust
Playful Communication
Playful Resilience

But you do not need to be at the Expo to join in.

• Choose an invitation from the image.
• Collect a few small THINGS from around you.
• Build, arrange, change or compose your response.
• Then share what you made, tag me, or follow the link in my bio to try the free invitations on Things Lab App and leave a little feedback.

I would love BRAVE THINGS to begin its journey far beyond Birmingham.

Take a walk with me through the wildflower meadow to see the progress of our new living lab at

This is a space designed to be a flexible meeting room/classroom/lab/art space/library and anything else we dream up.

It will house all our THINGS in its own Things Lab and allow us to do trainings and other collaborations.

Send me a message if you would like to learn more.

On this day 12 years ago we found out that our project for a new ED-Tech Start Up had been accepted to go on to phase two of the Open Education Challenge. Which we later won, joining 6 other amazing Ed tech projects across Europe. It was also Mother’s Day!

Happy Mother’s day to , myself and all the amazing mothers who we have met or not met, whom have supported this project in some form over the last 12 years!

Before this space officially opens,
I’m gathering a small group of people inside it.

📍 May 23 — In the Frame
Bothy Gardens, SN4 0FX
10:00–13:00

This is not a workshop. It’s a working session with people who care deeply about how we design learning, thinking, and experience.

Together, we’ll:
– explore how we think and work best
– step into the Think with Things approach
– shape what this space and these days could become

It won’t be polished. That’s exactly why it matters.

🌿 This is for people who are already doing the work:
– experienced educators
– facilitators
– designers of learning, teams, or experiences
– people who think with their hands, not just their heads

People who are looking not just to attend something, but to be part of something.

If that’s you or you feel a pull towards this, send me a message and join our little tribe here in the Southwest, UK. (If you want to travel further, that is also an option.)
