The needs a wider toolbox than "just doing the science".
They also need to translate, to listen, to ask better questions and understand systems. They need to be able to communicate uncertainty and help evidence become useful without making it simplistic.
Getting those "extra" skills was the thread running through our recent Science for Policy trainings with and the Network - Young European Associated Researchers. 90 people working on how science can move closer to policy and practice.
