🚛 Belgium’s kilometre charge will evolve again from 1 January 2027.

New rates will apply across the three Regions, with different approaches:

• Flanders: rate indexation and higher infrastructure charges for zero-emission trucks
• Wallonia: indexation based on the August 2026 consumer price index
• Brussels: no general indexation, but higher charges for zero-emission trucks

For zero-emission vehicles in Flanders and Brussels, the infrastructure component was fully exempted in 2024-2025, reduced by 80% in 2026 and will only be reduced by 60% in 2027. In practice, this means these vehicles will pay a larger share of the infrastructure charge next year.

Another reminder that fleet operating costs are becoming increasingly dependent on vehicle type, emissions class and region.

For transport companies, comparing mobility energy solutions increasingly means looking beyond energy prices alone.

⚡ A recent study suggests that electric trucks may already offer a lower TCO than diesel in several major European markets, including Belgium. But the conclusion deserves some context.

As TLV points out, TCO calculations do not always capture the full operational reality. Financing, charging infrastructure, vehicle utilisation, routes and day-to-day constraints can all significantly influence the outcome.

Each operation has its own context, constraints and energy needs, and these factors remain essential when comparing mobility energy solutions.

Europe’s truck manufacturers are calling for an adjustment to the 2030 CO2 compliance timeline.

According to ACEA, the main challenge is not vehicle availability, but the conditions required for zero-emission trucks to be adopted at scale.

Today, zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles still represent a limited share of new registrations, while charging infrastructure, grid access, energy costs and other supporting conditions continue to develop.

ACEA therefore considers that the 2030 timeline should be reassessed to better reflect the actual pace of deployment across the market.
A useful reminder that the transition depends not only on vehicle technology, but also on the broader ecosystem around it.

A concrete example of the multi-energy transition in heavy transport.

Colruyt Group is moving forward with hydrogen trucks while electric trucks are also gaining ground in the market.

Rather than opposing technologies, this illustrates something we have been saying for a long time: different mobility energies will continue to coexist depending on the use case, range, infrastructure and operational constraints.

For heavy transport in particular, the transition is unlikely to follow one single path.

This project is a good example of that reality taking shape in Belgium.

European road freight rates are rising sharply, but not because demand is booming.

The latest IRU x Upply x Transport Intelligence benchmark shows a clear contrast in Q2 2026:
• Contract rates: +15.2 points year on year
• Spot rates: +13.9 points
• Road freight volumes: -1.6% year on year
• Average EU diesel price: €1.94/l, up 27%

The key message is clear: volumes are beginning to stabilise, but the rise in freight rates is mainly being driven by higher operating costs, with diesel playing a major role.

The European commercial vehicle market returned to growth in the first half of 2026.

New registrations increased by:

• 1.9% for vans

• 9.8% for trucks

• 22.7% for buses

The transition between energy types remains gradual.

Diesel still represented 79.1% of new van registrations and 92.1% of new truck registrations. At the same time, electrically-chargeable registrations continued to grow, reaching 13.2% of the van market, 4.8% of the truck market and 27.7% of the bus market.

These figures show a market in transition, with different technologies progressing at very different speeds depending on the vehicle segment and its operational requirements.

Belgium is moving closer to introducing a digital road vignette from May 2027.

The current proposal would apply to vehicles under 3.5 tonnes, with an annual price expected to range between €90 and €125.

The system would be fully digital and linked to the vehicle’s number plate, while heavy goods vehicles would remain covered by the existing kilometre charge.

A significant development for mobility in Belgium, with several practical details still to be confirmed.

July 2026 brings several regulatory and operational changes for road transport in Europe. These include:

• smart tachograph requirements for part of the light commercial vehicle segment in international transport
• new toll rules in the Netherlands and Belgium, including a CO2 component
• additional GSR safety requirements for newly produced trucks and coaches
• stronger controls in Germany
• further customs and posting-related adjustments

Heatwaves are no longer just a weather issue.

They are becoming a real operational issue for transport and logistics.
Recent signals are already clear:

• in Belgium, TLV warns about pressure on cold chains and more difficult working conditions on the ground
• across Europe, companies are adapting schedules, equipment and daily operations to keep operations running
• disruptions in neighbouring countries can also impact logistics flows well beyond local borders

This means one thing: extreme heat is becoming a planning variable in its own right.

It affects deliveries, handling, cold chain operations, infrastructure reliability and, ultimately, costs.

In this context, the ability to monitor operations, anticipate disruptions and rely on accurate data becomes increasingly important.
