Last week we conducted our last meeting together and hosted our joint workshop “Next-Generation Antimicrobial Coatings for High-Traffic Surfaces” with Supreme coating. Thank you to our sister projects STOP and NOVA, who also shared results from their research.

Further thanks to everyone who participated and attended. It was a pleasure to meet and learn from each other.

Presented by Prof. Marina Rautenbach, Professor of Biochemistry at Stellenbosch University and partner of the Triple-A-COAT project.

Prof. Rautenbach is an internationally recognised expert in antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) and leads the BIOPEP Peptide Group at Stellenbosch University. Her research focuses on the discovery, synthesis and application of AMPs for combating pathogenic bacteria and fungi, with applications ranging from healthcare to agriculture and industry.

In this presentation, she will explore innovative antimicrobial strategies targeting ESKAPEE pathogens and discuss how cyclic antimicrobial peptides and 2-AIs can contribute to the development of safer antimicrobial surfaces.

Congratulations to Professor João Cabral, from our partner organisation Imperial College London for receiving the prestigious Julia Higgins award for his transformative leadership, dedicated mentorship, and commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.

Congratulations to Professor João Cabral on receiving the Julia Higgins Award 🥳

This recognition is particularly meaningful given João’s connection to Professor Dame Julia Higgins. In accepting the award, he reflected on being one of her last PhD students, and on the profound impact her mentorship, leadership and encouragement had on his career.

As Professor Omar Matar noted, João’s leadership, mentorship and advocacy have made a lasting impact, helping to create a more inclusive and supportive academic environment across the Imperial community.

A wonderful and well-deserved recognition. Congratulations, João!! 💙

This July, we sat down with Prof. Hans Steenackers, coordinator of the Triple-A-COAT project to learn more about how his has shaped the Triple-A-COAT project and how global, multidisciplinary collaboration and nature inspired solutions could prepare us for future pandemics and protecting us against antimicrobial resistance.

Prof. Steenackers heads up the MiCA lab at KU Leuven.
