☀️ Summer starts with business. And with people.

Over the past few weeks, Gevers colleagues have been out and about, taking part in some of the season's most inspiring business networking events. From Jong VKW Summerstart in Hasselt and the VOKA Waasland Tuinfeest, to AXIS Beach 2026 in Louvain-la-Neuve, each event offered a unique opportunity to connect, exchange ideas and strengthen relationships. Our colleagues even added a little healthy competition to the mix during the inter-company beach volleyball tournament. 🏐

Different locations. Different partners. One shared purpose: bringing people together and creating opportunities that drive business forward.

🇨🇳 Strengthening partnerships in China

Our China team recently had the pleasure of visiting several valued partners and clients across Beijing and Shanghai.


Throughout this trip, we had insightful discussions on intellectual property strategies, explored opportunities for deeper collaboration, and reinforced the strong relationships that are essential in supporting our clients globally.

From meetings with leading IP firms to experiencing iconic locations such as the Forbidden City and Summer Palace, this visit was both professionally enriching and culturally inspiring.

Perfume “dupes”: legal — but always fair?

In Nieuwsblad.be, our colleague Katia De Clercq shares insights on the rise of “dupes”, affordable fragrances inspired by well-known designer perfumes.

While many perceive this as copying, current intellectual property laws offer limited protection for scents. As long as brand names and protected packaging are not imitated, these products generally remain within legal boundaries.

✨ A touch of glitter, a lot of connection, and one shared celebration.

On January 22nd, colleagues from across our seven offices in Belgium came together at the beautiful Maison Mairie in Hasselt to celebrate what we achieved in 2025 — and to welcome 2026 together.

From patents and trademarks to our IP law firm, it was special to see all our business units under one roof, sharing good food, great conversations and, later in the evening, plenty of moves on the dance floor 💃🕺

What made the evening truly shine wasn’t just the elegant touches of glitter, but the warmth, energy and sense of unity that remind us how strong we are when we come together.

🚨 Protecting your brand starts BEFORE you file.
Here are 3 common mistakes that can ruin your trademark filing – and how to avoid them.

1️⃣ Choosing a descriptive brand name
❌ Example: ‘The Best Bread’ for a bakery.
✔️ Why is this risky?

A trademark must be distinctive and not merely describe the product or service or one of its characteristics.

2️⃣ Neglecting to search for prior rights
❌ Registering a trademark without checking whether an identical or similar trademark already exists can result in the application being rejected or a legal dispute.
✔️ Why is this essential?

It prevents you from (unintentionally) copying an existing trademark, facing legal action from a third party and wasting time in launching your business. Before filing, conduct a prior art search to identify potential risks.

3️⃣ Choosing the wrong products/services
❌ Registering a trademark without precisely identifying the products and services it covers and the classes to which they belong may limit or invalidate its protection.
✔️ Why is this important?

Your trademark only protects the designated products/services. If you do not target these products and services correctly, you risk leaving areas uncovered for your competitors. Use the Nice Classification and seek advice to ensure you don't overlook anything.
