Researchers at Karolinska Institutet have developed nanorobots that kill cancer cells in mice. The robot’s weapon is hidden in a nanostructure and is exposed only in the tumour microenvironment, sparing healthy cells. The study is published in the journal Nature Nanotechnology.

Here the authors present a pH-sensitive DNA origami nanoswitch that hides ligands for death receptors and displays them as a cytotoxic hexagonal pattern in acidic tumour microenvironments. This reduces tumour growth in a murine model of breast cancer with minimal on-target, off-tumour toxicity.

1/ Take a patent on your life - you are the one who should direct it
2/ Make sure you have freedom-to-operate - others should not block you
3/ Novelty is a first requirement for getting a grant - go for novel challenges and you may be rewarded at the end
4/ Inventivity is another requirement - think outside the current box and explore or combine with other domains as well
5/ Sufficient enablement is suitable - analyse the pro's and con's prior to your decision
