🌍 TraFaDy at the 5th ISA Forum of Sociology in Rabat

We are proud that Irma Budginaite-Mackine, Leader of WG1, represented COST Action TraFaDy (CA21143) at the 5th ISA Forum of Sociology in Rabat, Morocco (6–11 July 2025).

She presented joint research with colleagues from Poland on how Brexit and COVID-19 have shaped the lives of young Lithuanian and Polish migrants, emphasizing the implications for transnational families and youth transitions.
This global forum offered a valuable platform to share insights, strengthen international networks, and bring European perspectives into migration and family sociology debates.

📣 🚨 New Publication Alert 🚨

A new article by Viorela Ducu, Iulia-Elena Hossu and ÁronTelegdi-Csetri, entitled ‘The Well-Being of Transnational Families: Views and Relationality’, in Global Networks explores how Moldovan and Ukrainian transnational families experience well-being. Drawing on interviews with both adults and children, the study highlights how family well-being is relational and collective – shaped by shared decisions, emotional bonds, and the redistribution of roles across borders.

🌍 The Transnational Care Across Borders Summer School 2025 happened in Brussels!
From June 30 to July 9, we brought together 50 participants—students and professionals—from across Europe: Belgium, Germany, Turkey, Cyprus, Norway, Bosnia, Albania, Croatia, Spain, and more.
Over 10 days, we explored the complex realities of transnational family life, including:
🔸 Care practices across borders
🔸 Ethical and psychosocial dimensions of migration
🔸 Gender and informal labor
🔸 Community-based and creative research methods

Hosted by Odisee University of Applied Sciences and supported by the COST Action TraFaDy (CA21143), this summer school offered a unique opportunity to engage in critical dialogue, hands-on workshops, and meaningful field visits.

From Monday 30 June until Wednesday 9 July 2025

The summer school focuses on the impact of living in a transnational family and how to take care of each other. The programme consists of a mix of lectures, interactive workshops in small groups and field visits to organisations working with transnational families. We promote exchange between students, researchers and stakeholders from different countries, disciplines and career stages; and offer a limited number of grants for TraFaDy members.

🚨 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲 𝐏𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐫: 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞

We are excited to share the latest policy paper, "Adding Value to Horizon Europe and Beyond: The EU Framework Programme for R&I as a Policy Driver for Mental Health and Well-being." This important initiative, supported by 20 COST Actions and over 5,000 researchers, highlights the urgent need for mental health research across all life stages and calls for stronger EU funding and policy action.

A key contributor to this effort is Ursula Trummer, a dedicated member of the TraFaDy (Transnational Family Dynamics in Europe) network, whose expertise continues to shape critical discussions on mental health, migration, and social policy.

The paper outlines four key research gaps:
🔹 Mental health across the lifespan, from early childhood to ageing
🔹 The impact of social determinants such as migration, housing, and employment
🔹 Addressing vulnerabilities and improving access to mental health services
🔹 Supporting carers and the mental health workforce
This initiative reflects a shared commitment to improving mental health policies across Europe.

🚨🚨 New Publication on Transnational Families by COST Action CA21143 -TraFaDy

We are pleased to announce that hashtag members Irma Budginaite-Mackine, PhD; Isabelle Albert; Mieke Schrooten, dragan stanojevic and Anna Wojtyńska have published an article in the Journal of Family Studies titled "Defining transnational families across countries and time: An analysis of academic discourse on the phenomenon between 2003 and 2023."

The article explores the evolving concept of transnational families (TNFs) in a globalized and digital world. Based on an analysis of academic publications from 2003 to 2023, it highlights varying approaches to defining TNFs, as well as differences in thematic focus across countries and contexts. The study emphasizes the need for further research on complex familial networks and the impact of globalization on traditional family concepts.
