David Lynch said ideas are like fish. Stay in shallow water and you catch the small ones. Go deep and you catch the big ones.
That line won’t leave me alone. Because I keep asking: can AI actually invent, or just remix what already exists?
Could a machine have dreamed up Lynch? Written Kafka’s Metamorphosis, where a man wakes up as an insect and nobody blinks? Launched the Cobra movement, all wild color and child-like fury against everything art was supposed to be?
I don’t think so. A machine can’t dive deep, because there is no “in” to dive into. It can copy art and adapt it. But invent it? Connect dots that have no business being connected? That takes intuition. And intuition can’t be prompted.
I call it the intuition gap. The glass ceiling for AI.
But maybe I’m wrong. So prove me wrong. Show me AI work that genuinely invented something, not a slick remix but a real leap that surprised even its maker.
