Supply chain managers: your talent squeeze isn't a 𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺.

The Benelux has thousands of active jobseekers. Yet warehouses still can't fill critical roles; vacancy periods for supply chain planners now stretch 120+ days in some domains, nearly double what Rotterdam sees. In the Netherlands, over 40,000 logistics jobs sit unfilled. Belgium's logistics vacancy rate sits at roughly 3.7%–4.6%, above the EU average.

The bottleneck isn't bodies. It's 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀: WMS analysts, SAP IBP planners, automation technicians, but also familiarity with WMS user interfaces. A warehouse running at 35°C is not operating at 100%.

Heat is one of those warehouse challenges that quietly creeps up on you and is often underestimated. Many warehouses are big boxes with limited cooling. In summer, temperatures climb fast, especially around loading docks, mezzanines and picking areas.

Most of the time, we talk about heat in terms of worker comfort. That matters – a lot – but it is only part of the story.

Research shows that injury risk goes up as temperatures rise. One study (in industrial settings) linked every 1°C increase in humidex to a 0.5% increase in the odds of a workplace injury. Large-scale studies estimate tens of thousands of workplace injuries every year are related to hot working conditions, including indoor environments such as warehouses.

But heat also shows up in your ex*****on.

When handhelds, tablets, batteries, forklifts and other equipment are pushed closer to their thermal limits, performance and reliability start to drop. At the same time, people need more breaks and fatigue sets in faster. You feel it on the floor long before you see it in a report.

That is when your WMS data start telling you something is wrong.

The software itself does not “feel” the heat, but the process around it does. Lower picking productivity, delayed replenishment, more exceptions, more scanning issues and longer cycle times all end up in the KPIs that warehouse managers monitor every day.

Temperature also affects your stock.

In some environments, “ambient” is not a safe assumption. In hospital warehouses we work with, we have seen ointments that are fine without cooling begin to degrade once ambient temperature rises above 25°C, with an impact on composition and shelf life.

As heat waves become more common, heat management is no longer just a facilities topic. It is becoming an operational topic – and a WMS topic – as well.
