The man doesn’t know that there is a snake underneath. The woman doesn’t know that there is a stone crushing the man. The woman thinks: “I am going to fall! And I can’t climb because the snake is going to bite me! Why can’t the man use a little more strength and pull me up!” The man thinks: “I am in so much pain! Yet I’m still pulling you as much as I can! Why don’t you try and climb a little harder!?”

The moral is— you can’t see the pressure the other person is under, and the other person can’t see the pain you’re in. This is life, whether it’s with work, family, feelings or friends, we should try to understand each other. Learn to think differently, perhaps more clearly and communicate better. A little thought and patience goes a long way.

It's not fear that gets in the way of daring leadership, it's armor. How do we self-protect when we feel uncertain, afraid, or vulnerable? Is our armor perfectionism, being the knower, shame/blame, reacting versus thoughtful responding, action bias . . .?

Stress scientist Elissa Epel asked this question to begin a recent talk: What are you uncertain about right now?

A pervasive feeling of prolonged uncertainty hovers over us throughout this pandemic, intensified by political and social upheaval. Not only are we experiencing the unknown, we're unsure of when that uncertainty will end. Many of us still don’t know when we’ll go back to offices or classrooms, make plans, see family, go out.

As Elissa Epel says, our brain works to keep us safe by trying to predict the future. And when we’re uncertain (even unconsciously), our body activates our stress responses. We feel uneasy, trapped in ambiguity, afraid. When uncertainty is prolonged, that stress often manifests as grief, helplessness, despair, and loss.

It can help to name it. What uncertainty do you feel in your body right now? How has that stress shown up in your behaviors?
