Do you know how widely used Bag in Box packaging is?

There are at least 10 different product groups that extensively use Bag in Box as one of their primary packaging formats:

3. Dairy

Dairy products are one of the first product groups to start adopting the Bag in Box packaging formats around the world. By dairy we usually mean Fresh and UHT milk, milk creams, milk shakes, liquid cheese (yes, like the one you put on your Nachos in your favorite cinema), etc.

Most often dairy Bag in Box packaging is aseptic - sterilized by Gamma or X-Ray radiation. This helps in extending the shelf-life of the product inside the bag. Aseptic bags means aseptic production and filling technology. The filling machines for aseptic dairy bags could be semi-automatic or fully automatic with an aseptic chamber.

Dairy Bag in Box products are used in HoReCa sales channels. They are sold to hotels, bakeries, restaurants, sweet shops and milk dispensing units at supermarkets, schools, and hospitals. Most standard size is 10L, however bag sizes can be adjusted according to customer needs.

Taps used for dairy bags: milk cap with tube, snap cap, and screw cap - see photos.

Do you know how widely used Bag in Box packaging is?

There are at least 10 different product groups that extensively use Bag in Box as one of their primary packaging formats:

2. Juice

Juice Bag in Box (BIB) packaging formats are very popular for filling NFC juices (Not From Concentrate), BIO juices, Organic juices and Cold-pressed juices. All these are high-quality products and people all over the world love to drink Bag in Box juice - best for you and your family.

Usually, juice in Bag in Box is filled in transparent EVOH/LDPE bags, however, there are customers that still prefer the metallized version of the bags. Both bags are suitable for hot-filling of pasteurized juice between 82.5 and 85 degrees Centigrade. Customers can also buy aseptic bags for juice if their filling and processing technology is aseptic.

Most standard sizes for Bag in Box juice are: 2L, 3L, and 5L. For storage purposes or HoReCa producers may also use 10L and 20L bags.

Main advantages of Juice BIB:
- Juice stays fresh for 2-4 weeks after opening, because of the no-air-return taps - (in tetra-bricks or glass bottles expiry date is 2-3 days after opening)
- Easy and convenient sizes and dispensing suitable for domestic use (3L and 5L) - no lifting required by children or elderly people
- Ideal for hotels, bars and restaurants with dispensing solutions (see photo)
- Eco-friendly solution

NEW trends:
a) 220L EVOH drum bags with 1’’ inch Elpo cap for hot-filled pasteurized juice. Very good for storage of ready made juices, especially for seasonal juices like: aronia (chokeberry), strawberry, blueberry, ginger, bio apples, etc. Also, perfect for frozen fruit purees, where aseptic barrier is unnecessary (see photo).

b) White/Red tap in combination with transparent foil - better recycling credentials.

If you have any questions regarding any of these products and you want to learn more about how our products may help your company, please contact me, and I will be more than happy to assist you.

4 reasons why Bag in Box is considered a sustainable packaging for your liquid product:

4. It can be recycled in existing recycling streams

The recycling of Bag In Box packaging is fairly simple and easy, because the outer box is 100% recyclable cardboard fiber material, and customers can recycle it in the existing recycling streams, while the inner plastic bag is deflated when empty and when separated from the tap/cap can be also recycled in the existing recycling streams.

Deflated bag means considerably less volume of plastic waste going to the waste fields or recycling facilities, which translates into fewer trucks driving back and forth, thus less CO2 emissions.

Latest developments: a) White body taps for better detection of materials in sorting facilities; b) Better barrier properties of transparent foils, so they can be used instead of MET laminates, wherever possible; c) Development of mono-material foils for better recycling properties of the bags.

4 reasons why Bag in Box is considered a sustainable packaging for your liquid product:

3. It lowers transport and warehousing costs

Bag In Box packaging brings significant savings by optimizing transportation and logistics operations and costs.

Bag In Box is a lightweight packaging and the bags come deflated, which means there is no transportation of empty space - air.

For example, on one standard pallet you can fit around 6.000 to 7.000 empty 3L Bag In Box wine or juice bags, which is equivalent to 18.000 to 21.000 liters of ready wine or juice product after filling. In order to transport glass bottles, for the same amount of ready wine and juice products, you will need a minimum of 10-15 pallets. Can you just imagine this difference in transported pallets? It is indeed huge.

The same is true for transporting empty HDPE containers and buckets, tin containers and buckets, and PET bottles (except if they are not blown locally at the factory).

Additionally, Bag In Box’ outer box is usually with cube or rectangular shape, which translates into maximum usage of pallet space during transportation of ready products. There is considerably less air compared to transporting bottles or buckets and this means transferring more product per pallet, thus saving on transportation costs and emitting less CO2 per pallet.

4 reasons why Bag in Box is considered a sustainable packaging for your liquid product:

2. It reduces the amount of food/product waste

Bag In Box packaging formats are usually coming with dispensing taps/caps that do not allow air to get inside the bag during dispensing/discharging, which prevents fast product deterioration.

For example, when you open a bottle of wine, air immediately comes into the bottle and into contact with the wine, and the oxidation process starts, which automatically means that this wine will be suitable for drinking only for some few more days, usually 3-5 days.

On the contrary, if you buy a 3-liter Bag In Box wine box, equipped with a standard no-air-return wine tap, you can consume it safely even one or two months after opening.

Increasing shelf life and decreasing food waste shall be a priority in the years to come, and Bag In Box can really help with that.

Stay tuned for No. 3 reason!

4 reasons why Bag in Box is considered a sustainable packaging for your liquid product:

1. It reduces packaging material waste

Bag In Box packaging is reducing the amount of packaging material used per liter of product packed by fitting more product inside one piece of packaging.

The standard sizes of Bag In Box retail bags are 3L or 5L, which means 3-5 times less glass bottles or tetra bricks are used for the same amount of packaged product.

The Bag In Box HoReCa formats for wine, juice, edible oil, liquid eggs, fruit preparations, and condiments start from 5L, and the standard sizes are usually 10L, and in many cases 15L or 20L, therefore, you can imagine how much materials one is saving by using a larger packaging format for their liquid products.
