💊 Finding qualified medical experts to annotate clinical data is one of the most consistent challenges in medical AI. Too often, datasets are labeled by generalists when the task requires real clinical judgment, and that gap shows up directly in model performance.

Doctors in the Loop is our dedicated annotation team within Humans in the Loop. Our projects are matched with medical professionals with relevant specialty experience: radiologists for imaging, surgeons for surgical video, pathologists for histology, and other specialists depending on the task.

🔎 Slowing down to flag an issue mid-project feels like it costs time. In practice, the teams that skip that conversation are the ones spending months on model remediation later.

Yalda Alhabib, our Project Manager, on how we handle it: 💬 "When something feels ethically gray, we don't just quietly fix it on our side, we always bring it to the client. If something doesn’t sit right, we pause, explain the issue clearly, and work with the client to adjust the guideline. I’ve seen cases where we caught a demographic imbalance early or where the team raised concerns about sensitive content, and after discussing it with the client, we reshaped the setup to make it fairer and safer for everyone."

After almost nine years of annotation projects across medical, geospatial, automotive and industrial , this is the practice we keep coming back to.

🌟 Stella Mwangi is a full-time freelance digital marketer based in Nairobi, with years of copywriting experience behind her. When AI started reshaping the writing industry, Stella knew her services needed to evolve, but couldn't figure out where to take her career next.

Through HITL Foundation's Career Counselling programme, working with Eid, our Social Mediator, Stella identified a concrete path forward: shifting from copywriter to communication strategist. A move that built on her existing skills while stepping into territory less vulnerable to automation. 💼

The programme also pointed her toward a Coursera scholarship she hadn't known existed. On what the experience meant to her: "Validating it's an eye-opener. No judgment, just encouragement and direction."

⚖️ High-quality AI training data starts with how the people producing it are treated. At Humans in the Loop, that belief is built into every project we take on.

1️⃣ The operational case for this is straightforward. Annotators who receive a written agreement explaining not just the task and the deadline but what the data will actually be used for approach the work differently.

2️⃣ Annotators paid fairly and trained specifically for each project make fewer errors and stay engaged across longer ones. The annotation industry's race to the bottom on wages produces rushed work, high error rates and training data that requires expensive remediation downstream.

3️⃣ Our Fair Work Policy is specific about what this looks like in practice. Every annotator is paid above local minimum wage and every annotator receives project-specific training before work begins.
