Interesting read. New list of "critical" materials is released. Among other points in the document one important is the 0% of waste reprocessing for some materials (Li included) on one hand and on the other the outlines of the strategy for "Sourcing from the European Union" which begins as follows: As global demand for critical raw material grows, primary raw materials will continue to play a key role. Mobilising Europe’s domestic potential better is an essential part of the EU becoming more resilient and developing open strategic autonomy.
Europe has a long tradition of mining and extractive activities. It is well-endowed with aggregates and industrial minerals as well as certain base metals such as copper and zinc. It is less successful in developing projects to source critical raw materials, even though there is significant potential for these. See Figure 3. The reasons are multi-faceted: lack of investment in exploration and mining, diverse and lengthy national permitting procedures or low levels of public acceptance.

We are very happy to share that our consulting geologist Tsvety has successfully defended her PhD thesis in structural geology. Perhaps one of the very few positive things of the social distancing is the opportunity to concentrate and upgrade your qualification. We are proud with what Tsvety did, knowing how complicated the terrane was and how much field and laboratory data had to be interpreted for the completion of this work. We are looking forward to new exciting projects with lots of field exploration, lots of structural analysis, lots of crazy geochemistry.

The green revolution was triggered some 20 years ago or even more by the perspective of getting to the point where nonrenewable fossil fuel production will not meet the monstrous demand. Now we know that this post apocalyptic scenario, where a jar of petrol will be like the manna from heaven, is not even close to the truth. Nevertheless, we are going green just with a different reasoning like global warming and pollution. This is fine and logical but now the question is are we not in a similar situation where, like the fossil fuels, the global production of the so-called critical raw materials will not be enough to satisfy the hunger of the green industry. In addition, the “green gap” between demand and supply is growing a lot faster and bigger than what was predicted for the petrol back in the 90s. Staying in the field of the horrible figures of less than 10 % recycling of these materials (and for some metals it is even less than 1 %) makes the risk of a huge crisis much higher. So, the point is we shouldn’t be in such a hurry to go green in order not to get very brown.

A new pro-mining investment policy, more free trade deals, and an incoming "geopolitical" European Commission signals the EU will stake more claim on critical raw materials.
