🔔 Important reminder: Microsoft Office 2021 reaches end of support on 13 October 2026

Is your organisation still using Microsoft Office 2021? Then it's time to start planning an upgrade.

On 13 October 2026, Microsoft will officially end support for Office 2021. After that date, users will no longer receive:
❌ Security updates
❌ Bug fixes and product improvements
❌ Technical support from Microsoft

While Office 2021 won't stop working overnight, running unsupported software can introduce security, compliance, and operational risks that may impact your business over time.

📌 What should you do?
We recommend upgrading to:
✅ Office LTSC 2024 for organisations that prefer a traditional perpetual licence model
✅ Microsoft 365 for those looking to benefit from continuously updated applications, cloud services, enhanced collaboration, and built-in security features.

🔔 Update for Windows 10 Users: ESU Protection Just Got Extended for a Year

Good news if you're still making the move from Windows 10 to Windows 11!

🆓 Microsoft has extended the Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for personal devices by an additional year. Security coverage, previously set to end in October 2026, will now run through October 12, 2027.

What should consumer users do now:
✅ For those already enrolled in ESU: You don't need to do anything - the extra year of protection is applied automatically.
✅ For those not enrolled yet: You can still sign up through Windows Update, with three enrollment options:
• Sync your PC settings at no cost.
• Redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points.
• Make a one-time $30 purchase.

💡 What does ESU cover?
ESU delivers critical security updates to eligible Windows 10, version 22H2 devices, but it doesn't include new features, general fixes, or technical support. It just gives you more breathing room to plan your transition to Windows 11 without leaving your device exposed in the meantime.

👉 Not sure if your device is enrolled or whether it qualifies for ESU? Check under Settings > Windows Update.

🗜️ Quick check: When did you last update your file archiving tool?

This month, two separate stories highlight a troubling reality: popular compression tools like WinRAR and 7-Zip have become prime targets for cyber attackers, yet most of us rarely give them a second thought.

1️⃣First, a newly identified vulnerability in WinRAR (CVE-2026-14191) could allow attackers to execute malicious code on your computer via a specially crafted archive file. While the issue has been patched in version 7.23, WinRAR does not update automatically, so many users might still be running a vulnerable version without knowing it.

2️⃣Second, researchers have discovered a threat group distributing fake 7-Zip installers through more than 230 lookalike websites. Once these fakes are installed, they quietly turn victims' devices into nodes within a proxy network, all without any noticeable signs of trouble.

Since archiving tools rarely prompt users for updates and are often downloaded directly from search results, they have become a significant blind spot in our security awareness.

So, what should you do?
✅ Only download WinRAR, 7-Zip, or any archiving tool from the official website.
✅ Check your current WinRAR version under Help > About WinRAR, and update to 7.23 or later if needed.
✅ Be cautious with unexpected archive files, even from familiar-looking senders.
✅ Consider centralised software inventory tools if you're managing this across a team.
The result? A five-minute check that closes a gap most people don't even know exists.

👉 Take a moment today to confirm your archiving software is up to date and came from an official source.

🔐 Still using SMS codes to secure your Microsoft account? This post is just a friendly reminder that it is time for an upgrade!

As you may already know, Microsoft is phasing out SMS verification for personal accounts, encouraging users to adopt more secure authentication methods instead. Work and school accounts are not affected.

As SMS has become increasingly vulnerable to phishing attacks, SIM swapping, and other account takeover techniques, Microsoft recommends these alternatives to users:

✅ Passkeys (Signing in with fingerprint, face recognition, or device PIN).
✅ Authenticator apps
✅ Verified backup email (account recovery when the device is lost or replaced)

The result? Stronger account protection, faster sign-in experience, and fewer opportunities for cybercriminals to exploit weak points in the authentication process.

So, what to do now?
👉 If you're using a personal Microsoft account, review your security settings and set up a passkey or alternative authentication method, plus a recovery email.

🎤 We’re proud to share that our CTO, Angel Atanasov, recently took part as a panelist at Spinoff Europa Conference 2026 in Sofia, contributing to an important conversation on turning cybersecurity strategy into real, effective implementation.

🔐 “Panel 2: Cybersecurity in Europe — From Strategy to Implementation” took place on 12 June 2026 in Sofia, powered by our partners Cyber4All 2.0 (Европейски цифров иновационен хъб "Тракия" European Digital Innovation Hub "Trakia" )

The discussion focused on a critical challenge: 👉 How can SMEs adopt advanced security architectures without slowing down their operations?

Together with fellow experts, Angel explored:
🔹 Practical approaches to digital resilience
🔹 The role of innovation hubs in supporting businesses
🔹 How to bridge the gap between policy and real-world deployment
🔹 The importance of automation and proactive risk mitigation

The panel, moderated by Dr. Hristian Daskalov, brought together leading voices from across cybersecurity, academia, and innovation to share actionable insights for businesses navigating an increasingly complex threat landscape.

👏 A big thank you to the organisers and all participants for an inspiring and meaningful discussion.

At DCD IT, we believe that strong cybersecurity isn’t just about strategy—it’s about ex*****on, adaptability, and continuous improvement.
