New rules allowing expatriates in Bahrain to legally employ domestic workers could spell the end of the housemaid visa black market, authorities hope.

The Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) has changed the way it distributes domestic worker visas, which previously were only issued to Bahrainis.

Under the changes, any non-Bahraini with a residency permit valid for at least six months, who receives a salary of at least BD1,000 a month, can apply for a visa by paying a BD500 deposit. This will then be refunded to the applicant by the LMRA at the end of the domestic worker's two-year work contract '“ provided no violations have been recorded.

The hiring changes for domestic workers come on the back of a new 'unified maids contract' that has been accepted by all the member countries of the GCC.

Gulf Air to Operate Daily Flights to Thiruvananthapuram
Gulf Air, the national carrier of the Kingdom of Bahrain, today announced the increase of its direct services to Trivandrum International Airport following a successful first year of operations. The national carrier will operate a daily service starting from the 5th of December 2014 between Bahrain and Thiruvananthapuram.
Commenting on the airline’s network enhancement, Gulf Air Acting Chief Commercial Officer Mr. Ahmed Janahi said: “Following a successful year since the re-launch of our direct flights to Thiruvananthapuram in December 2013, we are delighted to announce our increased frequency that follows consistently strong passenger demand (with an average of 85% seat factor in 2014 to date). Kerala’s capital city will be serviced with daily Gulf Air flights in order to meet travelers’ needs, particularly those of the region’s 5.6 million strong Indian community, further reinforcing the strong historic ties between Bahrain and Kerala and our airline’s key role in encouraging two-way travel, trade, tourism and investment opportunities”.
The increased frequency will lead to enhanced travel connections between Thiruvananthapuram and key markets worldwide, including the GCC and Middle East region where Gulf Air holds a leadership position with double daily flights to more than 10 regional cities. Accordingly, the Kingdom’s national carrier is well positioned to link Thiruvananthapuram and other Indian cities to key business and leisure destinations in the region and beyond with excellent connectivity via Bahrain in less than 3 hours.
Recognizing the key importance of the Indian Subcontinent, Gulf Air has strengthened its position in the Indian market through a number of initiatives including, most recently, the announced resumption of flights to Hyderabad, becoming the airline’s sixth India destination, with 5 weekly flights, starting from 15 December 2014.
Together with the latest daily services to Thiruvananthapuram Gulf Air operates 10 weekly services to Chennai, double daily flights to New Delhi and Mumbai, and daily to Kochi in addition to the upcoming 5 weekly service to Hyderabad. In total Bahrain’s national carrier provides a total of 57 weekly direct and full service flights between India and Bahrain.
The two additional weekly frequencies between Bahrain and Thiruvananthapuram will operate on Mondays and Wednesdays departing Bahrain at 13:30 to arrive into Trivandrum International Airport at 20:35 and departing Thiruvananthapuram at 21:20, arriving in Bahrain International Airport at 23:45.
Flights can be booked online at www.gulfair.com, by calling the airline’s 24 hour Worldwide Contact Centre on (+973) 17373737, or through any Gulf Air sales offices and approved travel agencies.
