Dar es Salaam, United Republic of Tanzania | 7–9 October 2026

The Lake Tanganyika Authority (LTA), in collaboration with Deutsche Gesellschaft fΓΌr Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GIZ, organized a regional workshop from 7 to 9 October 2026 in Dar es Salaam to technically review the Revised LTA Strategic Action Programme (SAP) for the Protection of Biodiversity and Sustainable Management of Natural Resources in Lake Tanganyika and its Basin and the Gender Mainstreaming Strategy.
The meeting brought together representatives from the four LTA member statesβ€”the Republic of Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the United Republic of Tanzania, and the Republic of Zambiaβ€”as well as national experts, representatives of research institutions, civil society representatives, and technical and financial partners, notably GIZ, the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), and The Nature Conservancy (TNC).

The overall objective of the workshop was to present the draft revised and updated LTA SAP and the Lake Tanganyika Gender Mainstreaming Strategy to the LTA Technical Committee for technical validation.

During the workshop, participants reviewed both documents through technical presentations, Member State group discussions, and plenary sessions. The discussions resulted in several recommendations, particularly on improving performance indicators, defining baselines and measurable targets, strengthening monitoring and evaluation mechanisms, and incorporating Member States’ priorities.

As a key outcome of the workshop, the Member States agreed to grant GOPA consultants four weeks to incorporate all comments, observations, and recommendations into the final versions of both documents. Furthermore, a comprehensive Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Plan, including baseline values, measurable targets, and SMART indicators, will be developed with the support of UNOPS.

During the closing ceremony, Dr. LIWENGA Emma Teresa , Executive Director of the LTA, commended the active participation of the Member States and expressed her appreciation to GIZ, through the Tanganyika Kivu Water Management (TAKIWAMA) Project /EAC4Nature Programme, GOPA consultants Worldwide, and the other technical and financial partners for their support. She emphasized the importance of translating strategic priorities into concrete, measurable, and inclusive actions, while strengthening regional cooperation for the protection and sustainable management of Lake Tanganyika.

The LTA strengthens regional cooperation for sustainable fisheries management in Lake Tanganyika

Kigoma, United Republic of Tanzania, September 29 – October 2, 2026 –

The Lake Tanganyika Authority (LTA) convened a Regional Technical Meeting on Fisheries, bringing together members of the LTA Regional Fisheries Technical Committee from the four riparian States β€” Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the United Republic of Tanzania and Zambia β€” together with the Director of Fisheries, technical experts, consultants and Secretariat staff.

The meeting aimed to review, harmonize and technically validate several key technical documents, to support efforts to reverse the decline of pelagic fish stocks in Lake Tanganyika.

Participants reviewed the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for Monitoring, Control and Surveillance (MCS) covering lake and land patrols, assessed the socio-economic and ecological impacts of the annual biological fishing closure (15 May – 15 August), and discussed measures to curb illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing through stronger regional cooperation and community participation.
The meeting endorsed the harmonized MCS-SOPs for lake and land patrols, subject to the incorporation of Member States' comments.
Member States called in particular for strengthened MCS capacities, harmonized fisheries data collection, stronger implementation of regional management measures and the development of alternative livelihoods for communities heavily dependent on fishing.

Closing the meeting, Dr Emma Teresa Liwenga, Executive Director of the LTA, welcomed the active participation of the four Member States and reaffirmed the importance of regional cooperation and science-based management in securing Lake Tanganyika's fisheries resources for present and future generations.

The Lake Tanganyika Authority (LTA) and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) held a workshop from 24 to 25 September 2026 in Dar es Salaam aimed at strengthening their partnership and defining areas for future collaboration.
The workshop primarily aimed to reflect on lessons learned from the partnership over the past two years, align the expectations and roles of both organizations in the International Climate Initiative (IKI) supported β€” Lake Tanganyika Biodiversity Conservation Network for Nature, Communities, and Climate Resilience (LaTaBioCoN) Project, and develop a joint and actionable TNC–LTA Partnership Roadmap.
Discussions focused on key areas including transboundary coordination, technical and scientific leadership, policy engagement, communication, resource mobilization, conservation finance, and opportunities for long-term collaboration.
Through presentations, group work, and discussions between the two organizations, the two organizations agreed on priority areas and clarified their respective roles and responsibilities. The two organizations also developed a joint partnership roadmap, outlining key activities to be implemented, responsibilities, implementation timelines, coordination mechanisms, and required support.
Other key outcomes of the workshop included the consolidation of lessons learned over the past two years, identification of priority opportunities for transboundary collaboration, and agreement on the next steps for coordination, communication, resource mobilization, implementation, and follow-up.
The workshop therefore marks important step in strengthening the TNC–LTA partnership and advancing joint efforts towards biodiversity conservation, sustainable management of natural resources, and sustainable development in the Lake Tanganyika Basin. The Nature Conservancy
