What is Book Breakthrough?
I've seen too many highly motivated first-time authors either put off writing their book for years, or begin writing but give up before they finish.
It’s not because…
- they’re lazy or
- they suck at writing.
It’s not even because they “just don’t have time right now.”
It’s because they don’t know the next step to take. ..
I created Book Breakthrough to address this problem. The next step isn’t “just write!”
The next step is to create a clear roadmap that you follow throughout the book-writing process...
What if there were a way to finish all the heavy lifting of writing a book in just 8 weeks, so all that was left was telling your story?
That’s what Book Breakthrough offers. All the details at the link in my bio.

OUTLINES: Do you outline first?

My confession: I don't, usually! I have actually created quite long workbooks and other longer pieces with no detailed outline.

Sometimes I've created an outline only *after* I started the project. I couldn't quite see how the pieces connected until I actually started writing. I like to start in the middle.

Outlines provide a map, useful when you sit down to the computer and you're not sure where you've left off or why you're getting stuck.

BUT, I also think that outlines trap some writers in perfectionism. "I can't start UNTIL my outline's done." (And somehow it's never quite done.)

Curious what you think: do outlines help? 👇

Have you been trying to write your book on your own? Have you started and stopped several times? This one's for you.

I write a lot about finding the fun in writing but...

Sometimes writing is a slog. Sometimes we’re huffing and puffing and the finish line is close but it feels far away. Sometimes the finish line IS JUST FAR AWAY and that’s why it feels far away.

If you’re writing a book, and you get to this SLOG point, how do you decide to stick with it?

Find a way to be held accountable. What happens if you don't finish by a certain date? If your answer is "nothing," that makes it way too easy to quit.

How can you change that answer from “nothing” to something?

Of course I help with accountability. You don't have to do it all on your own. If you want to find out how to work with me, DM me...

time. I am a ghostwriter, writer and editor living in San Diego, where this pic was taken last month. I've got a 6-year-old and a 3-year-old and yet I still wrote my first book this year because I love writing while getting constantly interrupted. It's been a banner year for that!

I'm also busy ghostwriting a client's memoir, set to release in the middle of next year.

The secret to writing a book:
Write
Edit
Write some more

That's it! Except that's not "it" at all, and that's why I also write a weekly email letter where I talk through the blocks that keep us from writing about the things which are most meaningful to us, which I call the Big Idea for short.

Fun fact, I've swum this very ocean in 5 triathlons. The swim is always my favorite even though I'm always one of the slowest competitors in my age group. There's a metaphor in that somewhere.

I got this quote from the Last Dance docuseries about the '90s Bulls. (Go watch it to get your '90s nostalgia shot in the arm.)
But what a great insight for life, right? Particularly for creating.
It comes in handy every time you want to write but you stop yourself before you begin because you’re afraid what you write will be crap/piss people off/be a waste of time.

Why would you think about missing a shot you haven’t taken yet?
(I talk through more details in my weekly letter, publishing Wednesday. DM to get on the list and get the letter in your inbox.)

You can still say it.

Whenever I hear my clients tell me that they had a great idea, but XYZ famous person already does it better.

I get it. Top 5 worst feelings in the world:
5. You have an idea for something, maybe an idea you cart around for years, and then one day you’re scrolling Instagram or flipping past the local news or walking through a bookstore (remember those?) and you SEE your idea, alive and produced and encased.

It’s what you tell yourself after you have that feeling that helps you get through it.

What do you tell yourself when you see your idea in front of you as a finished project?

Do you tell yourself a stranger got there first? Do you beat yourself up?
Or do you tell yourself… “Well, they did it their way. But I can still say it.”
You can still say it.

It’s obviously a good idea. That’s why it made it “to market.” But it’s never exactly your idea, because it’s not the way you would execute it. Your process will be different, which means your product will be different.

Even on HONY’s Wikipedia page, it says, “Hundreds of ‘Humans of’ blogs have since been developed by people in different cities around the world influenced by HONY.”

Which is great! Because Humans of New York is a great idea! But Brandon Stanton is just one person and New York is just one city.

When it comes to a good idea, there is always room for more. More participation, more feedback, more evolution.

What’s a good idea you’re carting around? You can share it in the comments.
Or if you're afraid I'll steal it (LOL) write it down in your planner right now, just to remind yourself: You have great ideas.

Which one of these do you carry around? ... Whether you've had someone read your writing and tell you not to quit your day job (✋🤨), or thought "If I was supposed to be writing, I'm sure a good idea would hit me ⚡" (also me) OR whether you've always believed the process of writing has to be painful (not me but a lot of my clients), I want to hear which myth hits you in the feels. Next week I'll be dissecting and reframing each one, so look out for that!

When the pandemic started, people committed to working out more. Getting in the best shape of their lives and so on. I saw it on Twitter.
ANYWAY, I’m not in great shape but I ride my bike most weekends. I have been doing that for years. So I’d be out riding my bike and I’d see someone running 7 or 8 mph UP A HILL. Running faster than I was biking!
And then, they’d conk out before they reached the top. And I, at my tortoise pace, would just keep going, passing a sweaty face tilted toward the heavens, hands pressing on the small of their back.
Why do we approach hard stuff this way?
> Years where we do nothing.
> Then a one-time burst of all the energy we can muster.
> Then (shocker!) a realization that we have bitten off more than we can chew?
WHY DO WE THINK THAT’S GOING TO WORK??
Getting in shape physically is a lot like trying to write a book, actually. At least, I see clients trip up at the same place these weekend runners. They rent an AirBnB and decide they’ll write their book in a week. … Well, maybe not all of it, but certainly A LOT OF IT, right??
But instead they conk out at day 2. They get all sweaty. And not because something is wrong with them.
It’s because they’re a few simple but crucial that will clarify what they’re trying to do so they don’t follow a day of inspiration with months or a year of no writing at all.
Wanna know what those steps are? They’re in my book (link in my bio) OR you can DM me if you want to skip to an in-person meeting.

My mission is to help womxn who have something to say to get the words out. Because when womxn give ourselves permission to claim a platform, speak a message, and be heard, we are dismantling patriarchy.

👻

Get the words out. For some womxn that means coaching as they write their own books, and editing the book when it's finished.

👻

But did you know I also ghostwrite books? Many of my clients know their Big Idea, a concept that combines their experience, expertise, and personality in a way that no one else has ever done.

👻

But going from Big Idea to finished book in your hands takes more than the “willpower” to show up and write. It takes organizing your ideas into a story. Making a book-length argument.

👻

Even if you’re an ideas person, weaving a Big Idea through an entire book is daunting. That’s where my 20 years of writing and editing experience come in handy.

👻

My mission is to help you get the words out. Period. So if you have the Big Idea, but you’re struggling to get the words out, get in touch. You don’t need to create your book alone.
