📵 More than half of countries now ban phones in schools.
According to a new UNESCO analysis released for the International Day of Digital Learning, 114 education systems worldwide, representing 58% of countries, have introduced national bans or restrictions on phone use in schools. Just three years ago, this figure stood at 24%.
From national bans to school-led policies, countries are exploring different approaches to reduce classroom distraction while supporting students’ learning.
But banning phones alone is not enough.
Schools also play a critical role in helping young people develop digital literacy, critical thinking and responsible technology use, essential skills for today’s world.
On the International Day of Digital Learning, UNESCO reiterates its call for a human-centred and rights-based use of digital technology in education to benefit all learners.
