From Dublin to São Paulo, memory, identity and emotion cross oceans. 🇮🇪🇧🇷
Irish filmmaker, musician and producer Elton Mullally is currently in São Paulo documenting the Brazilian production of An Old Song, Half Forgotten, now adapted as Uma Velha Canção, Quase Esquecida at Pompeia.
Over five years, Elton and co-director Natasha Duffy have followed the journey of Irish actor Bryan Murray after his Alzheimer’s diagnosis, capturing the emotional impact of a story about loss, memory and identity.
What surprised Elton most in Brazil?
“How would I follow the rhythm of the play without the English script? I realised quickly it didn’t matter. The emotion pours off the stage.”
The production, directed by Domingos Nunez and starring Genézio de Barros and Luri Saraiva, keeps references to Dublin, the River Liffey and Inchicore intact — now spoken in Portuguese, but carrying the same emotional weight.
For Elton, the connection between Ireland and Brazil runs deeper than language:
