TOUGH TIMES AHEAD AS BREAD IS SUSPENDED IN SOME SCHOOLS DUE TO LACK OF FUNDS
By Staff Reporter
MOGODITSHANE, 11 June 2025 – Learners in the Mogoditshane-Thamaga District will no longer be receiving bread at school starting this week, following an official suspension of supplies due to financial constraints, a circular from the District Council has confirmed.
In a letter dated 10 June 2025 and addressed to all school heads within the district, Council Secretary Jimmy C. Mckenzie announced that the provision of bread to schools would be suspended effective 11 June 2025. The decision, he stated, was necessitated by ongoing budgetary limitations.
“This serves to notify your office that due to financial constraints, the supply of bread has been temporarily suspended,” the letter reads in part. “This also affects Hand Stampers as they are paid under the same vote.”
The suspension is expected to disrupt daily nutrition routines at various schools, where bread forms a key part of student meals, particularly for those from underprivileged backgrounds. It is not yet clear how many learners will be directly impacted, but the decision raises concerns over food security and the welfare of pupils in the district.
In addition to the bread suspension, the letter instructed school heads to immediately inform all concerned parties, including suppliers and hand stampers, about the halt in services. No timeline was provided for when the services would resume.
“The suspension lifting will be communicated as soon as the financial situation improves,” Mckenzie stated.
The development signals growing pressure on local authorities amid a challenging economic environment, and highlights the strain on essential services such as school feeding programmes.
Efforts to reach district council officials for further comment were unsuccessful at the time of publication.
