February 2020 – Gaborone Bus Rank Parcel Counter extended operating hours from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.👏🏾

March 2020 – COVID-19 arrived. Curfews and lockdowns were introduced, so we had to go back to closing at 6:00 PM.

2021 – As the country recovered, many businesses extended their trading hours again. Several pharmacies in Gaborone even started operating 24 hours a day. It felt like Botswana was slowly building towards a true 24-hour economy. We also returned to closing at 8:00 PM and were planning to extend to 9:00 PM or 10 PM

2022 – Then came the wave of heists. Businesses became concerned about security, and many were forced to reduce their operating hours again. Most returned to their normal closing times. 🙆🏾‍♂️

Looking back, I believe those heists cost Botswana more than just money. They slowed the momentum towards a 24-hour economy. Had businesses felt safer, many might have continued extending their hours, creating more convenience for customers, more jobs, and more economic activity.

Many entrepreneurs spend years searching for the “NEXT BIG IDEA,” when the opportunity may already be right in front of them. The challenge lies in finding a way to differentiate yourself.

I’m always fascinated by business names.

“Strata” is lingo for hustle, so every time I hear the name “Strata Sa’o Bitsa”, I think: “The hustle is CALLING you.” ❤️

And honestly, when you look at the way they operate, you can see that this is more than just work for them. There is passion, commitment and pride in what they do. That’s usually what happens when people discover their CALLING. Whether it’s singing, dancing, teaching, building, fishing, coaching or running a business, once you find what you were meant to do, you become DIFFICULT TO COMPETE WITH because you’re no longer working for survival only—you’re working from purpose.

Kele rolela hutshe, go amogela thomo ya lona and doing it with excellence. 👊🏾
