Three things I wish every business owner knew about BURS compliance:
1. "I didn't know" isn't a valid defense for late returns
Even if you genuinely didn't know a return was due, BURS still issues the penalty. Compliance is your responsibility, whether you're aware of the specific requirement or not.
2. Late filing penalties compound
Miss one month, pay a penalty. Miss multiple months, those penalties stack. What starts as a manageable fine becomes a serious cost that could have been avoided.
3. Your bookkeeper/accountant can't file returns they don't know exist
If you're handling some compliance yourself and some through a professional, things slip through the cracks. Clear ownership of who files what prevents this.
The cost of non-compliance isn't just financial. It's stress, time spent fixing it, and potential complications when you need clean records for financing or business decisions.
If you're unsure whether you're fully compliant with BURS requirements, that uncertainty is worth addressing now - not when the penalty notice arrives.
