Orange Money Botswana, in partnership with Paymentology, has introduced Visa 3D Secure in Botswana, enhancing security for customers using virtual cards for online transactions.
The new feature adds an extra layer of authentication during online payments, requiring customers to verify transactions before they are completed. This is aimed at reducing fraud and preventing unauthorised use of cards, while improving approval rates for legitimate payments.
The rollout comes as e-commerce activity continues to grow, increasing the need for stronger safeguards. Industry estimates show that strong customer authentication measures such as 3D Secure can reduce online fraud significantly while improving transaction reliability.
Customers using Orange Money virtual cards may now receive secure prompts when making online purchases, subscriptions or other payments. Completing this step ensures transactions are authorised and securely processed.
According to Seabelo Pilane, the move strengthens customer protection and builds trust in digital payments. Paymentology said the partnership supports the development of secure and accessible digital commerce across the market.
The introduction of 3D Secure is expected to support the growth of online shopping in Botswana by reducing failed and fraudulent transactions, while giving users greater confidence when transacting digitally.
