π WORDS FROM A PUBLISHER
Todayβs Topic: The Importance of Text Placement on a Book Cover
One of the most overlooked aspects of cover design is not the colours, images, or fonts, it is where the text is placed.
Many authors focus on making the title large and attractive but forget that a book cover is a printed product. What looks perfect on a screen can become a problem once the book is printed, cut, and bound.
A professional cover designer always considers the βsafe area.β
The safe area is the space where all important text should remain. This includes:
π The title
π Subtitle
π Author name
π Endorsements
π Spine text
π Back cover text
Why is this important?
βοΈ CUTTING TOLERANCES
After printing, books are trimmed to their final size. Industrial cutting machines are highly accurate, but slight movement can occur during production.
If text is placed too close to the edge of the cover, part of it may be cut off during trimming. Even a few millimetres can make a noticeable difference.
π SPINE AND SCORING LINES
For perfect-bound books, scoring lines are created where the front cover folds into the spine and where the back cover folds into the spine.
Text should never cross these scoring lines.
When text sits too close to the spine, part of it may disappear into the fold, making it difficult to read. In some cases, the scoring line can run directly through letters, creating an unprofessional appearance.
π¨ BALANCE AND READABILITY
Good text placement is not only about avoiding printing errors. It also creates visual balance.
A cover with breathing space around the title looks cleaner, more professional, and easier to read than one where text is crowded against the edges.
WHAT AUTHORS SHOULD KNOW
β
Keep important text away from all edges.
β
Keep text clear of spine folds and scoring lines.
β
Leave adequate safe margins on the front and back cover.
β
Ensure spine text is centred correctly.
β
Always design with print in mind, not just screen appearance.
β
Request a print-ready cover proof before printing.
Remember:
A beautiful cover can be ruined by poor text placement.
The goal is not simply to make text fit on a cover. The goal is to ensure that every word remains visible, readable, and professional after printing, trimming, folding, and binding.
Because in publishing, every millimetre matters.
Until next time,
