After the marketing vs finance departments fight, comes another one marketing vs sales. The role of marketing is to generate (qualified) leads through brand awareness whilst it is the Sales role to convert these leads into cashflow by recruiting paying customers.

Marketing minus Sales = hard to convert leads.
Sales minus Marketing = dataless feedback leading to poor marketing materials which undermines the quality and quantity of leads.

In the end, we only regret the chances we didn’t take. (Lewis Carrol). Just before the year ended, I got my first solid business referral conversion. I roundly thank Jireh the Provider, Elmo Lombard and Kobie Lombard as well as every BNI Cape Town North & Winelands - South Africa members from the Visionaires chapter who opened up and shared their life and business lessons to make me feel like I belonged.

This was my highlight for 2023 and is the chance I am glad I took. To God be the glory amidst the challenges of the past year!

While a CMO may have a good grasp of marketing and branding, it is generally perceived that they may lack the broader business acumen required to be an effective CEO. There have been, however, interesting developments in boardrooms in the last few months.
- Zoom’s ex-CMO has become CEO of the video conferencing platform, Neat
- Rated People ex-CMO has returned to be the new CEO.
- Taco Bell (Yum Brands) has appointed their Chief Brand Officer (Michael Tresvant) to CEO. David Gibbs, Yum Brands CEO, went as far as calling Tresvant “a visionary business leader and best-in-class brand builder.”

When creating compelling content learn to ‘be first, be best or be different’. Make it edu-tainment and your audience will reward you with their attention.
Case in point: Marathon athlete Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya 🇰🇪 runs 40km in 1hr 59mins (imagine running 17 secs for 100m and then keeping that pace non stop for close to 2hrs). Africa burst with pride. One of us had broken a world record. When the murmurs of this being a questionable tech-enabled victory Africa hit back by overturning that long held and widely accepted proverb of Africans perpetually lacking a sense of urgency. ..And that’s how you go viral 👊🏽😉
