Botswana is set to focus on modernizing and diversifying its agricultural sector starting in 2025, with several key strategies aimed at improving productivity, food security, and economic sustainability.
1. Agricultural Transformation Strategy: The Ministry of Lands and Agriculture is finalizing an ambitious strategy to enhance productivity through sustainable land management, resource optimization, and adoption of modern farming technologies. This plan emphasizes supporting smallholder farmers, promoting environmental sustainability, and integrating agriculture into the national and global economy【9】【10】.
2. Focus on Climate-Smart Agriculture: Botswana has already implemented initiatives under its Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) framework. The country plans to expand these programs by introducing drought-resistant crops, solar-powered water systems, and improved livestock breeds to mitigate the effects of climate change【9】.
3. Policy Enhancements and Regional Cooperation: The Joint Sector Review, conducted with the support of the Food and Agriculture Organization and the Southern African Development Community, has identified gaps and set goals for improving agricultural policies. This includes fostering collaboration among stakeholders, encouraging sustainable surpluses, and integrating agriculture into regional markets【12】.
4. Investment in Infrastructure and Innovation: The government aims to attract investments in irrigation, agricultural processing, and mechanization to boost efficiency and output. The strategy also highlights the importance of evidence-based planning and data-driven decision-making to support long-term agricultural development【11】【12】.
5. Food Security and Employment: By increasing local food production and reducing dependency on imports, Botswana plans to achieve greater food security. This effort also aims to create more jobs, especially in rural areas, as part of the country’s economic diversification initiatives【10】【12】.
These efforts align with Botswana’s broader goals under international commitments, such as the Malabo Declaration, which emphasizes agricultural transformation and food security across Africa.
