Last week at this time, 150 real entrepreneurs gathered at Game City for the Start-Up Summit Botswana - learning how to start, survive and scale from people who have actually done it. We also welcomed 10 newly registered companies through Gaborone Business Associates
People say conferences are just talk, talk, talk with no results. We challenged ourselves to be different. We formed a community to support each other and challenged everyone to return next year with measurable growth.
But the bigger mission is this: Botswana needs an environment where entrepreneurs can succeed without political connections.
One resolution from the Summit is to organise at least 500 serious entrepreneurs, pool our ideas, networks and resources, and build an independent economic voice capable of influencing policy and pushing for a genuinely conducive business environment with equal opportunities.
For too long, genuine entrepreneurs have been sidelined while politically connected tenderpreneurs get ahead.
Government should create the environment and
fair rules - not decide who succeeds in business.
Entrepreneurs: formalise, collaborate, scale, employ and build wealth.
Who really creates jobs and grows the economy, Politicians, or Entrepreneurs who invest, take risks and build businesses?”
