The Minerals Development Company Botswana (MDCB) has appointed seasoned finance and investment professional Pelaelo Daniel Khowe as Caretaker Chief Executive Officer, effective April 20, 2026, as the state-owned investment arm moves to maintain stability during a leadership transition.
Khowe brings over two decades of experience spanning finance, accounting, grants management and strategic leadership across both the public and private sectors. He joins MDCB from the Ministry of Minerals and Energy, where he served as Permanent Secretary, overseeing Botswanaโs mining and energy portfolio, including key state-owned enterprises.
His appointment comes at a critical time for MDCB, with the Board signalling a focus on continuity and sustained momentum. Board Chairman Oabile Mabusa said Khoweโs deep understanding of the minerals and energy landscape, coupled with his experience in investment strategy and governance, positions him to provide steady leadership.
Khowe has been closely involved in some of Botswanaโs most significant resource and energy initiatives. He chaired the Finance Working Group during the BotswanaโDe Beers diamond negotiations and played a central role in structuring the countryโs first 300MW coal-fired Independent Power Producer project, alongside coal bed methane pilot projects.
His track record in high-level negotiations and large-scale project oversight is expected to support MDCBโs mandate of driving value from Botswanaโs mineral assets, particularly at a time when the sector continues to evolve.
He is a recipient of the Naledi Ya Botswana award, recognising his contribution to national development.
The appointment is seen as part of MDCBโs broader effort to ensure leadership continuity while advancing its strategic priorities in the minerals sector.
