AFRICAN TALKS | WHY MASISI’S RWANDA TRIP MATTERS

Former President of Botswana, Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi, is heading to Kigali, Rwanda, to participate in the 20th Africa Food Systems Forum (AFSF), hosted by President Paul Kagame.

But what is this really about?

The Africa Food Systems Forum is one of Africa’s major platforms for discussing how the continent can transform its food and agriculture sector. It brings together African leaders, investors, businesses, farmers, development institutions and policy experts to discuss food security, agricultural investment, technology, climate resilience and economic transformation.

With more than 5,000 delegates from over 50 countries, this is more than a conference, it is a marketplace of ideas, partnerships and investment opportunities.

🌍 THE AFRICAN TALKS PERSPECTIVE

Africa has enormous agricultural potential, yet many African countries still import large amounts of food.

The question is therefore not simply “How do we produce more food?”

It is:

How do Africans build food systems that create businesses, jobs, industries and wealth within Africa?

Botswana’s participation matters because opportunities discussed in Kigali can translate into agricultural investment, regional trade, technology transfer and stronger food-security strategies for Botswana and the wider SADC region.

This is also why African leadership must connect with African business. Governments can create policy, but entrepreneurs, investors and farmers must turn those policies into production and economic value.

African Talks asks us to look beyond the summit: What opportunities can Botswana and Africa capture from these conversations?

African Talks Tribute to Africa’s Giants

Let us take a moment to honour the giants who spoke, fought, built and sacrificed for Africa.

Winnie Madikizela-Mandela— A powerful voice of resistance against apartheid who endured imprisonment, harassment and persecution while mobilising communities and keeping the struggle for South African freedom alive.

Patrice Lumumba— Fought for the independence, unity and dignity of the Congo, refusing to accept colonial control in another form.

Eduardo Mondlane— Founded and led FRELIMO, helping lay the foundation for Mozambique’s liberation from Portuguese colonial rule.

Julius Nyerere— Led Tanganyika to independence and championed African unity, self-reliance and Pan-African cooperation.

Thomas Sankara— Championed African self-reliance, economic independence, discipline and a rejection of dependency.

Agostinho Neto— Led Angola’s liberation struggle and became its first president after independence.

Samora Machel— Led Mozambique through independence and sought to build a self-reliant nation after colonialism.

Steve Biko— Inspired Black Consciousness, teaching Africans to reclaim their dignity, identity and psychological freedom.

Kwame Nkrumah— Pan-Africanist visionary who led Ghana to independence and called for African political and economic unity.

Ahmed Sékou Touré— Asserted Guinea’s right to political independence and famously rejected continued French colonial control.

Léopold Sédar Senghor— Promoted African cultural identity and helped develop the intellectual movement of Négritude.

Seretse Khama— Built Botswana around democratic institutions, stability and prudent management of the country’s resources.

Quett Masire— Helped consolidate Botswana’s democracy and economic development, emphasizing responsible governance and national self-reliance.

Robert Mugabe— Played a major role in Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle and the country’s transition from colonial rule to independence.

Mohandas K. Gandhi— His years in South Africa shaped his philosophy of nonviolent resistance, later becoming influential in anti-colonial struggles worldwide.

Muammar Gaddafi— Promoted African political unity and pushed for greater African control over the continent’s resources and institutions.

YOUTH MONTH

REMEMBER. BUILD. CONTINUE.

Their generation fought for political independence.

Our generation must fight for economic independence.

We must remember that colonialism did not end simply because flags changed. The struggle continues through economic dependency, unequal trade, resource exploitation, weak institutions and systems that keep African wealth from producing African prosperity.

Africa cannot only be a place where resources are extracted.
Africa must become a place where resources are processed, industries are built, capital circulates and African people create value.

Let us honour their sacrifices by becoming builders ourselves.

Down with neocolonialism.
Up with African independence.
Up with African unity.
Up with African production.
Up with African economic sovereignty.

The giants started the journey.
The youth must carry it forward.
