Botswana and the Kingdom of Lesotho have embarked on a new chapter in their bilateral relations following the inaugural Session of the BotswanaβLesotho Bi-National Commission (BNC), where President Advocate Duma Boko and Lesotho Prime Minister Samuel Ntsokoane Matekane reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation across key sectors that will drive sustainable development and regional integration.
Delivering the opening remarks, President Boko described the Commission as a platform that transforms the historic friendship between Botswana and Lesotho into a strategic partnership focused on improving the lives of citizens. He said the two nations share more than borders, but a common history, culture and destiny that should continue to shape their future.
President Boko announced Botswanaβs pledge of hundred thousands doses of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccines to assist Lesotho in responding to its first recorded outbreak of the disease, saying the gesture reflected the spirit of brotherhood and solidarity between the two countries.
He also highlighted opportunities for collaboration in agriculture, agro-processing, education, health, tourism, culture, the creative industries and the emerging cannabis sector, where Lesothoβs experience offers valuable lessons for Botswana. Looking to the future, he urged both countries to embrace the knowledge economy while protecting indigenous knowledge and cultural heritage in the age of artificial intelligence.
On regional infrastructure, President Boko said the proposed LesothoβBotswana Water Transfer Project remains a strategic priority for addressing Botswanaβs long-term water security needs. He further revealed South Africaβs interest in joining the initiative, paving the way for a trilateral project that could strengthen regional cooperation.
In his remarks, Prime Minister Matekane described the launch of the BNC as a historic milestone that provides a structured framework for advancing cooperation across sectors of mutual interest. He said the Commission builds on the agreement signed during President Bokoβs official visit to Lesotho in July 2025 and reflects the shared vision of both nations for peace, prosperity and economic transformation.
Prime Minister Matekane called for accelerated collaboration in education, renewable energy, agriculture, industrialisation, mining, trade and investment. He noted that Lesothoβs abundant water and hydropower resources complement Botswanaβs solar energy potential, while the countriesβ strengths in agriculture, diamond beneficiation and manufacturing present opportunities to build integrated regional value chains.
He also encouraged stronger partnerships in sports development, governance, defence and security, saying closer collaboration will help both countries address emerging regional challenges while creating opportunities for their youth.
Prime Minister Matekane concluded by expressing gratitude to Botswana for donating a hundred thousands doses of FMD vaccines, describing the contribution as a powerful symbol of friendship and solidarity.
