𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘅 – 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲
Statistics Botswana has released the Consumer Price Index for September 2026, which shows that Botswana’s annual inflation rate declined to 7.8 percent, from 9.3 percent recorded in August.
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿?
Annual inflation measures the change in consumer prices over a 12-month period. The decline means that prices, on average, increased at a slower rate than they did over the corresponding period last year. It does not necessarily mean that prices have gone down.
During September, food prices 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝟬.𝟲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁, largely due to lower prices for vegetables, meat, bread and cereals, as well as sugar and confectionery.
However, housing-related costs 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝟬.𝟲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁, mainly driven by higher rents and the cost of materials used for dwelling maintenance and repairs.
Annual inflation also declined across all geographical areas. Cities and Towns recorded 7.4 percent, Urban Villages 7.7 percent, and Rural Villages 8.6 percent.
The Transport group remained the largest contributor to annual inflation, contributing 4.0 percentage points, compared with 5.1 percentage points in August.
Although annual inflation moderated, the overall Consumer Price Index increased marginally by 0.1 percent during September. This means that the general price level continued to edge upwards during the month.
