As we enter into the warmer seasons of the year...the issue is not whether you know how to grow crops or not... it's the tricks you have developed,the cunning tendencies of a farmer and ability to be wiser than a serpent!

Summer brings everything to life...I MEAN EVERYTHING!

HUSTLE FREE IRRIGATION

When faced with a method of irrigation you need to use in your farm try to sit back and think o iketlile but there really is no fuss about it because you can always change when you need to.

Primarily you may use :
1. generated power
2.God's gift (gravity) to water.

Both have positives and negatives but here I want to give a snapshot of why I love gravity watering more.

1. Gravity in most instances when well calculated will give as much pressure as use of generated power/electrical.A 3m raised 10KL will give a high pressure watering circle for a half ha drip circle at 50+m hustle free.
2. Gravity method does not have a lot of repairs or fixing to be done.ones connected forever we go!Tsa motlakase go nna hela go na le bo pompo e rile,SE SE shele e.t.c
3.Gravity watering can go as far as you need it as long as you did your volume, distance and height calculations.EG,if you raise a 10KL up to 3m high,it can deliver good drip system watering pressure at 150+m for a block of 0.25ha.

These are my elbow biting points but I know someone may have a differing opinion.Nna I am sharing my experience and practice and this right here has a way of reducing farm related costs.

Understand though that if there's a need to return water like in a sense of a greenhouse or hydroponic system use...a small solar pump may need to be connected but this is different from buying a whole system ka bo P60K

I recently went into an interview with people from ITC and one of the questions they asked was..."what are some of your challenges in increasing production and ensuring your enterprise is profitable???"

"this has resulted in our local market being unpredictable.One moment they open and we struggle to sell our produce next thing they close and we are hands on deck but the problem...and very big problem ke gore it's impossible to know market trends with this tendency of closing and opening boarders."

I commented and said...why wouldn't the government choose to trust local producers,give them support and manage production and circle trends 📈?

Most of us farmers go through the worst especially because of boarders issues!

My take.

SOIL AND WATER TESTING

If you are to venture into horticulture and win, do not make a mistake of thinking soil testing and water tearing are overrated... You will be dumb to reason like that... THIS IS OUR FIRST AND MOST CRUCIAL STEP.

SEED SELECTION
When we talk about hybrid seeds... As much as I don't like them, hybrid seed will give you their best and best harvest you can ever get. But even heirloom seeds are equally good but your best bet will be hybrid seeds. Se tshowe ke tlhwatlhwa... Tshoswa ke dipoelo.
A packed of 2500 seeds of cabbage at 700bucks will give you at least P16k ha go padile and so plant 2 packets and get back to me.

PEST AND DISEASES CONTROL
Batho ba ha ba re hybrid seed are good in managing pests and diseases... Ke iponetse. You spend less on agro chemicals as along as your garden area is clean and well kept. Just make sure your watering circle and volumes are good

Is horticulture farming profitable in Botswana???

My take is...

If you are after a lot of propaganda and you don't focus your energy on issues you can control... You are going to fail before you start.

Horticulture farming requires a focused mind on to the objective and not propagandas.

What to focus on:

Your abilities
Invest in yourself and be sure the vision and your ideas are clear to you before you can project them onto anything or anybody!

Your farm abilities
How have you set up your farm???
What can your farm do for you?
What have you done to ensure your farm gives you what you want it to give you?
The idea here is to orientate your farm to your objectives!!!

Make honest calculations
I have seen people making desperate calculations that only feeds their desires and not realities.

You can't make a. Projections in Botswana Gore a head cabbage will cost P30. Thats absurd and dreams that will make your calculation profitability nothing more than ridiculous... Let's be honest in how we make calculations.

Inputs
Ensure to plan such that your inputs are waaaaay less than normal in your production cycle from 1 to the next crop

Marketing, selling and deliveries.
Ha ke mathata... Our farm workers ba ja ba iketlile because we are not always there but what are you doing to ensure your crops go whenever they are ready to go???
