Independence Hill, Belmopan, Jan 22, 2005. It was a tense day... I remember listening to the radio in Dangriga about the crowd showing up to Independence Hill and thought to myself.. i need to be there to document this. So, I jumped in the vehicle and sped to Belmopan.
I knew i had to get a good perspective of the crowd and thought,hmm.. wonder if the offices that flank the stairs were open.. and they were. I let myself into the building, walked down the halls and found an open office (no.. didn't ask permission). i sat down and slid my lens through the shape hole design of the tiles that made up the wall and got my perfect view of the riot.
While photographing, i heard more of disturbance closer to me and when i looked, it was Mr. Frazier, yelling at me, calling me an agent of the government sent to photograph those who were opposing the government so they can later be victimized. I was shocked, but also giggled because I for sure was NOT with GOB. I snapped the photo in black and white as he pointed directly at me, pointing out to those around him the "agent of GOB.
A little later, friend and journalist Janelle Chanona went to interview him where he again took the opportunity to single me out. He didn't know who i was or my name. That is the second photo, where Janelle is interviewing him.
A few mins later, the crowd near me got really riled up about me taking photos and eventually started to make their way towards the doors of the building where only one police and some weak unlocked doors separated me from them. I quickly packed up began running down the stairs. At this time, Commission of Police, Mr. Crispin Jeffries, released tear gas on the general crowd. The gas wooshed into the stairwell I was going down and I was happy for it because it delayed the angry crowd at the door for a bit.
I managed to then exit the way i came in, through the back doors, hoped into the vehicle and headed back home. There was no way i would stay longer and try to convince angry people that i was no agent of GOB.
I never got to meet Mr. Frazier.. and this was our only "encounter"... I respected his relentless fight for the people. Rest in Peace good sir, and thanks for these images and what was a rather frightful run from an angry crowd.
