Too often the HR Office in your company is seen simply as the people who hire and fire, issue disciplinary actions and are the people you go to when you want a raise. In reality HR does so much more. Every time I’ve run an HR Department for a company, my days started at 7:00 am and didn’t close off til 10:00 pm. The times outside the working hours is where I got the “routine” work done because my days were spent mostly taking care of the people who worked with us and making sure there weren’t any fires that would need outing. You hardly found me in my office unless there was someone who wanted to meet with me there. I often walked with my laptop - ready to set up anywhere. No one saw a lot of what I did. But at the endof the day I had a feeling of accomplishment and purpose.

There are times when our coworkers, and sometimes even managers, seem to feel that because our title says HR that this means we can work miracles. The reality is that we cannot. Employees need to be reminded that HR operates as a balancing scale - everyone has to do their part. Teams have to put in the work to get their tasks done in a timely and efficient manner. Supervisors and Managers need to be able to coach and to mentor. Executive team members should learn to lead by example - and to lead from within. HR need to understand what motivates the team and how to ensure that everyone is being treated fairly - at all levels! And everyone needs to have empathy and understand that life happens. Bottom line is that if we each do our part the machinery runs smoothly - and in a much more harmonious manner.

Are your team members comfortable enough to talk about whatever may be happening and their concerns? Is confidentiality a priority for your HR? If you hire HR, give them authority, not just tasks.

Too many leaders say they want strong HR,
But the moment HR speaks up, it’s called “pushing back.”

They want you to “fix culture”
But won’t let you question what’s breaking it.
They want engagement, but not accountability.
They want compliance, not courage.

Real HR isn’t about sending emails, scheduling trainings, or updating policies.
It’s about building fairness, trust, and a healthy workplace,
and that can’t happen if every decision needs approval from people who only see numbers.

If HR can’t challenge, lead, or say “this isn’t right”
Then you don’t have HR.
You have an admin with an HR title.

And let’s be honest,
HRs don’t burn out because of workload.
They burn out from constantly fighting for change in systems that don’t want to change. 💔

HR was not my plan. Law School was the plan….but then life happened and I had to pivot. Went into Business Management instead…but as I gained promotions and rose through the ranks I realized I had a talent for people. Listening to them, understanding them, imparting knowledge. The empath in me was able to connect with people at all levels. I was able to bridge gaps and make a difference. I found my niche. My place to belong. And I made an impact. A positive one. So HR was not my plan but it’s one of the gifts that life gave to me.

As Managers we need to remember that what worked 5 or 10 years ago doesn’t necessarily still work today…at least not the exact way it used to. We need to grow and evolve with the times. Elevation is not always a bad thing! Micromanagement is a think of the past….take it from me! I’ve seen too many companies lose good people because they are still micromanaging everything.
