This is where being 90% lighter than traditional gravel starts to matter.

For a rooftop patio at GNW Campus in Vancouver, we delivered Enviro-Rock in super sacks, giving the site team a practical way to crane the lightweight aggregate straight from the delivery area up to the roof.

At roughly ~200kg/m³, Enviro-Rock provided the fill volume they needed without the same weight as traditional gravel. Once in place, it also provides a free-draining granular layer beneath the patio build-up.

What do you put under patio pavers when gravel isn’t allowed?

This was the issue JEMM Properties LP was facing, and that’s where Enviro-Rock came in. Replacing the main backfill with a lightweight foam glass aggregate that could build up the patio assembly without relying on traditional aggregate through the full depth.

At roughly ~200kg/m³, Enviro-Rock gave the project the depth they needed without bringing in the same weight as traditional fills, while still providing a free-draining granular layer. A small change in material, but a big difference when weight is driving the design.

The first step in building six storeys here was making the ground lighter.

Scuka Enterprises Ltd. is constructing this project over a deep layer of compressible clay. A conventional foundation design would have left the structure facing up to 115 mm of long-term settlement.

To keep that settlement from being built into the project, 1.8 metres of heavy soil was removed across the footprint. Crews replaced it with a reinforced Enviro-Rock layer at just 250 kg/m³. By putting back far less weight than they took out, the design reduced expected settlement to less than 25 mm over 50 years.

The detention tank needed the fill above it had to stay under 500 kg/m³.

Enviro-Rock was selected to build the area back up without adding the dead load of a traditional aggregate.

Bulk delivered and placed directly into the work area in Mission.

Lightweight fill is not one material. It’s a design decision.

At the 2026 Vancouver Geotechnical Society Symposium, Read Fenton compared local BC pumice with Foam Glass Aggregate as lightweight fill.

The point isn’t that every material fits every job.

The point is that engineers now have another option when weight is driving the design.

Enviro-Rock is made from recycled glass, has closed-cell pores, and comes in at roughly 282 kg/m³ loose bulk density.

For projects where dead load, trucking, drainage, or site access matter, that difference is worth looking at.

Worth mentioning there’s another option besides Styrofoam for lightweight fill. Foam glass aggregate is made from recycled glass and can reduce load while also providing drainage and insulation.
