Today is another day to get up, head to work, and spend it alongside good people. The equipment is running, the work is getting done, not to mention Alberta is putting on one hell of an autumn.

The long shifts, early mornings and busy days can make it easy to focus on what’s next. Every once in a while, it’s worth appreciating what’s already here: the people beside you, the work you get to do, and simply waking up to another day.

Take care of your crew. Enjoy the view when you get the chance. There’s plenty to be grateful for.

Thanksgiving is a good time to slow things down for a minute and appreciate some of the things that can get lost in the day-to-day. We’re grateful for the people we work alongside, the work we get to do, and another year of showing up and doing it right.

Psychological safety matters in every industry, but especially in environments where people need to speak up, ask questions, challenge decisions, and call attention to risk.

This September in Vancouver, Grant Kelly represented Kaizen Safety Group at the Canadian Underground Infrastructure Innovation Centre - CUIIC Conference, presenting on psychological safety and its role in building stronger workplace cultures. The conversation goes beyond simply encouraging people to speak up. It’s about creating the conditions where they know they can.

Today, September 30, we recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

At Kaizen Safety Group, we take this day as an opportunity to reflect on the history and lasting impacts of residential schools, honour Survivors and those who never returned home, and recognize the importance of listening, learning, and moving forward with greater understanding. Reconciliation is an ongoing responsibility that calls for action, respect, and a willingness to keep learning.

It's starting to feel like fall. The mornings are colder, the days are getting shorter, and the leaves are changing. It’s easy to start thinking fire season is behind us.

In Alberta, wildfire season runs through October 31. For those working around heavy equipment, remote sites, dry grass, brush, timber and industrial operations, the conditions can still change quickly. A hot exhaust, a spark, a piece of equipment running where it shouldn’t, or a small fire that gets overlooked can become a much bigger problem.

So while the season may be winding down, the responsibility doesn’t. Keep the equipment clean and know your surroundings. Have the right firefighting equipment close by and don’t let cooler weather create a false sense of security.
