Today, crews from Airdrie Fire Department responded to calls involving ducklings trapped in storm drains in our community.

While these situations were easily resolved, it is important for us to share a reminder that storm drains can pose serious hazards — not only to wildlife, but also to people.

We appreciate residents who took the time to report these situations without attempting a rescue on their own.

A few important safety reminders:

• Absolutely do not attempt to enter a storm drain or lift grates yourself.

• Keep children and pets away from drain openings.

• Use caution when stopping near roadways to check on wildlife.

• If you encounter trapped animals, contact 911 in an emergency or call Airdrie 311 to help in determining the right resource

Thanks to the teamwork of our crews and concerned citizens, several ducklings were safely rescued and reunited with their mothers today.

Calls like these are a good reminder that public safety often includes helping the smallest members of our community too.

One year ago today, on a very rainy day, we broke ground on the new Highland Park Fire Station and Training Centre. Today, the project remains on time and it is certainly starting to look and feel like a fire station on the inside and out.

This is an exciting chapter as we grow to meet the needs of this amazing community. We look forward to seeing this all come together for our opening later this year.

At approximately 10:25 a.m. today (Friday, May 1, 2026), Airdrie Fire Department responded to reports of a structure fire on Baywater Street in Airdrie.

When crews arrived, they found a single-family home with flames visible through the roof. Firefighters from Airdrie, working alongside our partners at Rocky View County Fire Services, acted quickly to bring the fire under control and successfully prevented it from spreading to neighbouring homes.

The primary residence sustained extensive damage. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

We want to thank our partners for their support during this incident:

- Alberta Health Services Emergency Medical Services

- Royal Canadian Mounted Police

- Airdrie Municipal Enforcement

- FortisAlberta

- ATCO

We’d also like to recognize the staff at Nose Creek Elementary School, located across the street from the incident. Staff implemented an indoor recess as a precaution, and there was no risk to students at any time.

Thank you to our crews and partner agencies for their fast response and teamwork today.

This week is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week and the Airdrie Fire Department is proud to celebrate the exceptional call-takers and dispatchers from Red Deer Emergency Services, the calm voices and steady hands behind every one of our emergency responses.

911 call-takers and fire dispatchers are the critical first link when emergencies happen. They gather vital information, coordinate resources, and support first responders during some of the most stressful moments imaginable. Their professionalism, focus, and dedication play a direct role in keeping our firefighters safe and our community protected.

While their work often happens behind the scenes, its impact is felt on every call and every response. We are grateful for their skill, resilience, and the strong partnership they provide in serving the residents of Airdrie.

Please join us in thanking and recognizing our partners during this National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week.

Airdrie Fire Department crews were out today on a variety of weather related calls including multiple motor vehicle collisions. As the temperature cools tonight the roads will remain slippery so please take care on the roads this evening.

Hopefully the winter weather will soon be behind us but please drive carefully as we enter the long weekend.

Last night, crews from our Chinook Winds station visited homes in the Canals neighbourhood as part of our 'After the Emergency' program. Firefighters went door to door near the scene of Monday’s house fire to share home fire safety information and answer any questions from nearby residents.

Our thoughts remain with those affected by this incident. The cause of the is still being investigated.

To help keep your home safe, the Airdrie Fire Department offers a home fire safety guide with tips on preventing fires in your household. You can access it here:

This morning, the Airdrie Fire Department responded to a significant structure fire on Channelside Drive. Unfortunately, the primary building was a total loss, and nearby structures sustained some damage. Crews were able to limit the spread and prevent more serious damage to neighboring properties. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported.

It was an especially busy morning, with multiple structure fire calls occurring at the same time.

We would like to thank our partners at Rocky View County Fire, Crossfield Fire, and the Calgary Fire Department for assisting us in managing these simultaneous incidents. We also appreciate the support from Red Deer Dispatch, RCMP, EHS EMS, Fortis, ATCO, Airdrie Peace Officers, and many others who helped during this event.

A reminder to all drivers that winter conditions have returned to our area. Snowfall and dropping temperatures mean roads may quickly become snow-covered, icy, and unpredictable.

Please slow down, leave extra space between vehicles, and allow yourself additional time to reach your destination. Make sure your vehicle is winter-ready and clear all snow and ice from your windows, lights, and roof before driving.

Our crews have been responding to weather-related calls throughout the day and your safe driving helps keep everyone, including emergency responders safe.

Stay alert, drive for the conditions, and help keep our roads safe. ❄️🚒
