We've ALL been in that Zoom meeting. You know the one. The one where someone's not muted, and is making noise. Or the one where there's feedback from someone's audio, and you just don't know who.
Did you know there's an easy way to tell who that is? Just look at the participant list. To the right of each participant name, there are icons with a mic and camera, as well as the ... offering more options. See the mics below? The mic on the left is making sound. If that's not the intended speaker, that's your culprit! The people on the left are either muted (top right, in red), or off mute but quiet (bottom right).
There are SO MANY sounds we make without realizing that they make sound for others! These are especially noticeable if you're on a speaker mic: typing, moving papers, pushing something over on your desk. turning a page, and so many more.
Want to be a great and considerate Zoom participant?
- mute yourself if you're not talking!
- make sure any nearby mobile or other devices are on silent
- if you're on a speaker mic, be super-cautious of what you do while you're unmuted. If you're not sure if the audience can hear something, check the mic as shown in the picture. Anything coloured or moving in the mic means you're making sound.
Unwanted sounds in a Zoom call are just that: unwanted. They're unpleasant and disruptive to others, and reflect unprofessionally on you.
