Multitasking – Is this good or bad for productivity?

Multitasking keeps your mind full, busy, and always under pressure. Of all the bad habits, multitasking is among the worst and most common. “Switchtasking” or juggling two tasks by refocusing your attention back and forth between them, loses time and progress in the switch.

According to Professor Gloria Mark from the University of California, it takes about 2 minutes and 11 seconds to fully return to a task after interruption. Many people may be wasting a lot more time than they think.

In order to improve productivity, take measures to prevent interruptions and distractions in order to complete tasks before moving on to another task. In addition, group tasks together by type of task in a scheduled portion of your workday. An example would be to handle emails twice a day in blocked times.

Your attitude is the foundation for your success.

Because actions and behaviors come from your attitude, increasing productivity and personal success may require reshaping some of the attitudes that dictate how you use your time.

Evaluate how you plan you day, your week, your month. Are you spending time on high payoff activities and are you prioritizing in a systematic way? After answering this question, ask yourself if you are disciplined in completing planned imperative and important items each day.

If you are not pleased with your use of time, reflect on how your attitude and behaviors could be adjusted and improved as a basis for improvement. You determine your attitude. Your attitude is not determined by circumstances, but by how you respond to your circumstances.

Attitude drives success and can be the differentiating factor for you.

Transitions in life from the starting point to the end are best handled by first clearly envisioning the end result. Starting can be the toughest part of the transition and envisioning the end will provide inspiration and motivation to proceed. Don’t procrastinate, make the start! Consider this as a new beginning.

The middle of the transition can be messy as you navigate through unforeseen challenges but again having a clear vision of the end result will provide fuel to continue.

The realization of the end result is the reward for the journey. Embrace and celebrate your success. However, the ending can often be the beginning for a new transition which is a healthy outcome.
