Boundaries are often misunderstood. People sometimes hear the word and immediately think: distance, punishment, or rejection.

But healthy boundaries are usually what allow conversations to stay respectful in the first place. Especially during separation, emotions can escalate quickly when people feel unheard, overwhelmed, or emotionally exhausted.

A boundary can be as simple as saying:
“I want to continue this conversation when we’re both calmer.”

Not to avoid the issue.
Not to shut someone out.
But to protect the quality of the conversation itself.

Clear boundaries are not about creating more conflict. They often help reduce it.

In mediation, learning how to communicate with clearer boundaries can help create more productive conversations around parenting, finances, and next steps moving forward.

That difference in readiness can make communication incredibly painful.
