Chair taps is a practical exercise that helps improving balance, coordination, hip mobility, leg strength and single-leg stability, skills we use every day for walking, stairs and stepping around obstacles.

Helpful tips: Stand tall, move slowly and with control, and use a sturdy chair or countertop for support when needed. Start with a comfortable tapping height and gradually progress as your balance and confidence improve.

Safety first: Keep the chair stable, clear the surrounding area, and avoid reaching or lifting the leg higher than you can comfortably control. If you feel dizzy, unsteady or experience pain, stop the exercise. It's always recommended having someone present while you're exercising.

At Gentle Steps In-Home Fitness, we adapt exercise to your current abilities and help you work toward stronger, more confident everyday movement right in the comfort of your home.

Small Movement, Big Benefits.

Side stepping helps train the body to move confidently in directions we use every day, not just forward. It can help:

Strengthen the hips and legs.

Improve side-to-side balance and stability.

Build coordination and movement control.

Support safer direction changes and everyday mobility.

Build confidence with functional movement and support fall-risk reduction.

Movement Spotlight: Shoulder Elevation.

A simple shoulder shrug can help maintain shoulder mobility, postural awareness, and comfortable upper-body movement for everyday activities like dressing, reaching, and carrying.

⬆️ Lift: Gently raise the shoulders toward the ears.
⬇️ Lower: Slowly relax them back down.

Keep the movement slow and controlled, sit tall, and avoid forcing the range of motion.

At Gentle Steps In-Home Fitness™, simple movements are used as part of personalized, do it yourself programs that support confidence, mobility, and independence at home.

Exercise Spotlight: Seated Resistance Band Row

Posture Tips

Sit tall with both feet flat on the floor.

Keep your chest lifted and shoulders relaxed.

Gently engage your core and avoid leaning backward.

Pull your elbows close to your sides, squeezing your shoulder blades together.

Return slowly and with control—don't let the band snap back.

Functional Movement Benefits

Supports better upright posture while sitting and walking.

Improves pulling strength for opening doors, carrying groceries, and moving objects closer to you.

Helps counteract rounded shoulders from prolonged sitting.

Builds upper-body strength needed for greater confidence and independence in daily activities.

Exercise Tip: Focus on smooth, controlled movement and quality repetitions rather than pulling with heavy resistance. A lighter band with proper technique is often more effective than a heavier band with poor form.

Balance is a skill that can be improved through safe, progressive practice. These two advanced exercises challenge stability, coordination, and confidence while helping prepare the body for everyday situations where balance is essential.

Progression: Start on a firm surface while lightly holding a sturdy chair. As your balance improves, reduce hand support, increase the height of the step or foam pad, or slow the movement for greater control.

Simplifying: If needed, perform the same movements on the floor with both feet supported between repetitions, or keep one or both hands on the chair for added stability.

At Gentle Steps In-Home Fitness™, every exercise is individualized and progressed at a pace that matches your abilities, with a focus on improving functional movement, balance, confidence, and long-term independence in a safe, supportive home environment.

⬆️ Dorsiflexion (toes up) helps reduce tripping by improving toe clearance while walking.
⬇️ Plantar Flexion (heels up) strengthens the calves, providing the push-off power needed for walking and climbing stairs.

Exercise Tip: Perform 2–3 sets of 10–15 controlled repetitions, 3–5 times per week. Also, try alternating where one foot toes up while the other heels up.

Move slowly, maintain good posture, and prioritize quality over speed.
Small improvements in ankle strength today can make everyday movement safer and easier tomorrow.

At Gentle Steps we train, maintain and monitor long-term quality of movement. We build training schedules and programs that are aimed to support your current mobility level in order to maintain long-term independent living.

Exercise Spotlight: Couch-to-Low Seat Squat
Getting up from different seat heights is one of the most practical movements we perform at Gentle Steps.

This exercise gradually progresses from standing up from a couch to a lower seat, helping build the strength and confidence needed for real-life movements such as getting up from sofas, dining chairs, toilets, low seats, and even the floor.

Many underestimate this skill until it becomes a challenge, we work ahead of that.

Functional Fitness for Everyday Life.

This simple resistance band exercise combines balance, core stability, leg strength, and upper-body endurance into one movement. ✅ Better balance and stability
✅ Stronger legs and core
✅ Improved mobility and confidence
✅ Supports independent living

Most older adults begin noticing improvements within 4–8 weeks when exercising consistently 2–3 times per week.

A simple walk is great, but delaying the need to transition into a senior living or long-term care home while maintaining independence for as long as possible requires other considerations besides walking.

As we age, it's important to challenge the body in different ways:

● Practice standing up from a chair without using your hands.
● Reach, turn, and change directions during movement to keep mobility sharp.
● Include activities that require getting up, down, and around safely.

The goal is maintaining the ability to confidently move through daily life.
